  • 2011 Audi A3 2.0 TDI Sportback, Titanium Package, Lava Gray Pearl Effect

I've been a long-time lurker at a number of enthusiast forums (vwvortex.com, fourtitude.com, and audizine.com, just to name a few), including some time spent creepin' here at Stance Works. I figured that I should break out of my shell to contribute, especially since there are far less A3 build threads than I had originally expected to see when I first registered with SW!

Anyway, to begin, my name is JR. I'm 28 and I live in the Bay Area, where the weather constantly spoils us (winter ride height? What's that?). Prior to picking up my A3, I was mobbing around in a 2001 VW GTI 1.8T, which I've had since I learned how to drive. However, the miles were piling on, troubles were looming (broken timing belt, anyone?), and I needed something newer to daily. In April of 2012, I finally let go of the GTI and gave it to my dad (with 185k on the clock), and picked up the A3 with a stroke of luck (I'll save this story for another time); I haven't looked back since.

My first love (R.I.P.). 2.5" turboback, REVO chip running high boost (21 psig spike on a K03 turbo lol), modified airbox, methanol injection, and a few other subtle mods. Not quite the prettiest stance, but it handled well, drove fast, and looked decent for me being a broke college student at the time.

The new whip during its first week in my care (the original owner had only put in 7k miles; he/she got rid of it for a larger SUV). The first mod was pretty obvious to me: Thule AeroBlades and a pair of subtle Thule trays.

The thing I immediately fell in love with had to be the interior. All black everything.

I'll be updating this page somewhat frequently until I get all caught up with where I'm currently at. I hope you enjoy!

Debadging is like the gateway drug to car mods. Took off all of the S-Line and car model insignia, leaving behind just the rear rings (for now, at least). By the time you know it, I'll probably be working on suspension...

Thanks! Loving the allroad as well; I'll be watching.

Following the debadge, I called it quits and didn't mess around with a thing on the car from about mid-2012 to mid-2014. Originally, I didn't have any plans to play around with the A3 when I first purchased it; it was supposed to be an "adult" vehicle used for "adult" things, unlike the GTI which I had a little too much fun with (I-could-probably-go-to-jail-for-this sort of fun).

I did what any normal person would do. I enjoyingly drove the A3 to and from work, took it out to bike races, and went on random adventures with it. 500 miles to a tank of diesel is nice, especially when premium gas in CA was approaching $5 a gallon at the time. I drove it a lot.

            Typical TDI mileage.

My 15k mile service at Livermore Audi, a couple of hours before a bike race (5k service was done by the original owner--and guess what? He/she purchased a service plan together with the vehicle all the way out to 50k, so all the work is free until then! What a come-up!). The bike is a 2012 Felt FC with SRAM Red and Zipp 404s. I'm on something else now, but this was my team ride for the 2012 season.

Just a little bit of "adult" weekend fun. For reference, you could probably fit 4 kegs back there, but just make sure you have a cargo mat so that you don't fuck anything up. More reason to own a wagon.

Thule cargo box and snow shoes for trips to Tahoe (Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3D tires are legit).

It's not a Quattro, but with snow tires, the FWD can handle shitty conditions surprisingly well without chains.

Anyway, I eventually gave way, mostly thanks to the constant enabling coming from my homie Zach (7VCHVRY). He was well into his B3 project, and it didn't sit with me that I was doing absolutely nothing to the A3.

So...I picked up some 50mm springs from H&R to mate up with my S-Line shocks and struts, and some wheels spacers from ECS Tuning. Lightweight swag.

              All settled.

Giving Zach, Roy, and James a hand over at #becausebags with Zach's B3 interior swap. Check out the URS2 up on the lift.

                          Euro tails, going in.

Euro switch in Piano Black (shown installed); matches up perfectly with the Titanium Package trim. It feels good to stumble across rare bits, as I've never seen this switch before in this finish.

Rear fogs enabled with VAG-COM. I also went ahead and debadged the rear rings as well.

Went ahead and completed the whole OEM+ look with clear-corner E-codes. Sourcing these out for cheap on German eBay wasn't very fun. I also knocked out the front plate delete and swapped my silver emblem for a black one (it's molded in a glossy black finish). Subtle swag.

Looks great. Little details bring the car together. This thing is going to be bad as fuck when you get some new wheels.
