  • Low n Slow Passat

So with winter almost upon us, my mk2 golf pd tdi needs to go away, so a winter daily is on the cards.

A friend had a B4 sedan tdi for sale that I think i can turn into an ultimate daily on a very small budget (as all projects start  )

Heres how it looks at the moment,

And here's how it looked when i got it.

Its not a pretty sight at the moment, but with only 103k on the 1z motor and 12 months ticket, I couldn't say no, so the deal was done and the B4 in all its beauty is now mine to sort.

certainly not a looker at the moment, someone decided it would look nice with a rusty wing, a red oxide wing, a blue filler cap, along with some tatty alloys.

On the plus side it has brand new coilovers, freezing cold AC, and 4 electric windows that work!

I gave the inside a good hover out,

then without hesitation, i put her into my unit and started sanding her down!

So the paint work wasn't the best, and it would cost way more than its worth to get two replacement wings and have them painted. That left me with the option of either leaving it looking poo, or painting it myself where it will either look just as bad, or slightly better than it currently does.

So with two of my mates helping to key the whole car with 400 grit, and mask everything up (yes i should have removed most of it but i masked the lot [] ).

With that done and the car rubbed down with thinners, the first coat of battleship grey (or primer as it's sometimes known as) was applied.

So after 2 coats (20 cans of poundworlds finest - it gets worse and worse i know!) the masking tape was removed and the car left to dry

Once dry it was taken outside for a quick look around, and was named 'apache' - you'll never guess why

Then something needed doing with the almost non existant splitter. So i managed to get a mk2 seat ibiza GTi splitter and trimmed it (a lot) to fit. It still needs tweaking but you get the gist.

Then came the first wave of stealthing, in the form of a black front badge, and tinting the front reflectors/indicators. I might replace the reflectors with fogs in the future.

Heres Apache in the daylight, in dire need of some back to black

So the next part of the plan required 5x100, but there was no room for adaptors, and dual drilled hubs are way more handy, cheaper and imo safer than aluminium adaptors (don't get me wrong i use adaptors on my Golf, but there are plenty of people who seem to think re drilling a hub isn't safe even though it's thick steel).

Excuse the rather worn rear discs, I didn't fancy stuffing this up on spankers.

So firstly i bolted a 4/5x100 adaptor on that I borrowed from a friend

Then wound the 4 bolts in to mark where i need to drill on the disc/hub, then found the centre of each circle and centre punched them, then pilot drilled them on the pillar drill.

Then ran a 10.2mm bit through them

And finally, a 2 stage M12x1.5 tap set through

The holes line up perfectly, and the bolts seat evenly on the wheel

So this may give away what's coming

I also dug my Thule fairing out from my loft, and fitted that to some 761 bars with 754 feet

I think it looks stupid because the bars overhang, so a few measurements later and 30 seconds with the angle grinder, ended up with this

next on the list was to re drill the front hubs/discs and modify the ABS rings.

The only way i could see 10" rear wheels with an ET-10 fitting was with some slightly stretched tyres

Then it was test fit time at the current height

A quick bit of back to black on the splitters, mud guards and door handles

An up to date before and after photo

Small touches this time, I lowered it about an inch at the front and wound the rear coilovers all the way down (helpers still in), and added a bit of camber all round.

      Before

      After

Photo of the dual PCD hub in action

I also fitted an Alpine CDA-9883R head unit as it blends in well with the green illumination inside.

      Pressed numberplates

      Veg oil at the ready

Next job was to get the tracking done, only way that was going to happen was without the front bumper.

Then a mate took some pics that evening of her in her natural habitat

The ride was the harshest thing i've ever experienced, so out came the bumpstops

The front and the back ride height dropped so it was completely on them, the back moreso as you can see after i let the jack down

So I raised the back up to where it was and have left the front as its only a few mm, just need to attend to the front arches again now. Whilst i was busy I changed the front brake pads as they were on their last legs

And a couple of pics of her now, she rides so much better now she has suspension travel
