  • Betty - The BMW E28 520i Lux

So over the last 4 years or so I've various old cars, VW Mk1/2 Golfs, Mk2 Ford Fiesta and a Mk3 Ford Escort. I seemed to have an abundance of bad luck with the VW's, couldn't afford to finish the Mk1, hit a bump in the road in the Mk2 and killed it, and I never really clicked with the Fords. I put the Escort up for sale to fund another Mk2 but much to my surprise I got offered this...

I now present to you… Betty the E28.

She's a 1988 520i Lux model in Atlantisblau and comes pretty well equipped with power steering, electric windows, electric mirrors, and central locking, more technology in this than in my sister's awful Nissan Micra which is parked to it! The 6-pot 2 litre certainly lacks any kick but it's possibly the smoothest car I've ever driven.

Well… it is for the time being anyway. I plan to take her off the road at the end of this month as the tax runs out. While she's in hibernation she'll be fitted with Gaz coil overs and some nice wheels. I'm still unsure about what wheels I want but they'll be wide splits that's for sure. Riley Stairs' is certainly good inspiration and there's so many other lovely E28's from across the pond so I'm not short of ideas and advice.

The paintwork is pretty well kept and there's only the smallest bit of rust on the passenger side rear arch, there's a scratch along the boot as well but I'll deal with the paintwork after I've got her sitting pretty with some new shoes. The dash is totally un-cracked, and there are no rips or tears in any of the seats or carpets. All the gauges work and there are no lights up on the dash. She came with a full years MOT as of yesterday. Mileage is 139k which is backed up by extensive service and MOT history, she runs absolutely spot on.

I'll post up photos as and when progress happens, I'll be taking off the tow bar and the yellow tint off the spot lights tomorrow, give her a good detail once the weather picks up and after that is when the big things will begin.

I never knew the 520i sported a 6 cyl, very cool. Always thought it was a 4 pot. Car looks great!

Yeah I was surprised to find that out too to be honest. When I got the message from the guy offering it to me my first thought was 'damn I would love an e28 but it's probably a 4cyl auto or something, can't be dealing with that'. But to my amazement it's a 6 pot manual and I love it!

I've had a look on google, and on here, and I'm struggling to find any information on the conversion to fit VW Polo 6n coilovers to fit a BMW E28. From what I have seen it says that the rears are a direct fit, is this true? Also, what's required to fit them on the front, just the standard removal of the existing brackets off the coilover and weld them to the strut of the E28? Also what's required to fit camber adjustable top mounts to these for the e28 colt batter on top of the strut tower?

Unfortunately due to living in the UK it's extorionate trying to import some ground control or Catuned coilovers. The only other option is to buy GAZ coilovers over here but they're still like £900. I just wanna find a cheaper way to do it as I'm fed up of seeing my poor e28 sitting like a 4x4 and I'm beginning to lose enthusiasm for it so would like to find a quicker way of lowering her. I'm perfectly competent with a welder and have access to an entire machine shop so custom work is not really an issue.

        Any help is much appreciated.

        Thanks,
        Conor
