I think I found a pic of your friend while he was doing the pre-purchase inspection.
hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah ahahahahahahahhahahahahahhaah
Funniest thing I've seen all day! hahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahha
man seriously why bother? it's already just a stock shell, surely you can get a straight(ish) one minus the rust pretty cheap?
take it from a guy who just taught himself how to weld (well, shouldn't say that in past tense) it's a major PITA and requires heaps of perseverance. like really loads. or are you just in it for the learning experience?
funny story though, I just got back form Melbourne (~10 hour drive each way) to pick up a Z32 shell with a friend of mine that another mutual friend carried out pre-purchase of similar quality on. We all knew it had had a front ender in another life... what he didn't pick up on was the entire driver's rear 1/4 made of bog. and that the front ender was worse than we thought. and that every single section of the custom painted engine bay was properly fucked. then we towed it home for parts and found out the passenger door sill was also caved in too, lol.
what engine are you going with? surely if you just wanted to compete with a bike in a straight line the easiest route would be to boost a muscle car?
So I was at home the next day thinking about how lucky I was to have found such a rust-free car when my friend who did the pre-buy inspection texts me and says that he's not too confident that this car is a good candidate for an engine swap due to the rust...
There was something about this statement that really got me excited to make this rusty 240sx my daily driver.
So we all decided to go ahead with the engine pull, and here is a time lapse video on YouTube of us pulling the motortrain.
So we pulled all of the drivetrain and A/C and then I trailered it down to a shop where I could store it for the next few months.
At the new shop known as Fast Unks Speed Shop or Fast Unks, my little bro and I began stripping the interior to check for moar rust and also to strip out all the dyno mat and other sound deadening material in order to get rid of the old-person-has-definitely-died-in-here smell.
Imagine that.. More rust. I decided to just haphazardly begin cutting out (without any kind of plan to fix) all the rust.
You can tell from the pictures that this car was never smoked in.
This is the passenger side floor pan.. Imagine that.
Cut out the passenger side rear quarter rusted area.
Found this lovely rusted side skirt ^^^ I'd give it a 9/10
Pulled the engine harness after quite a long battle. No fatalities.
Here's the cut out rust in the passenger floor pan.
Here's the cut out rust in the passenger side skirt.
Pulled the dash.
Cut out the spare tire support for some odd reason. I think I was just on a cutting spree.
Driver side rear quarter cut out.
Me pretending like I'm happy.
^Preparing for a roll cage. No, just kidding. Cutting out more rust.
^^Cut out some of the rust in the driver floor pan. (some)
My bro^^^^
^ Tight fit in the shop.
^ ^ If you know what this is... you know what it is..
No car owner should ever have to see their interior from this angle...
Decided that I would upgrade the brakes to the Flinstone 9000 model ...
Started poking around some more in the frame rail area.. It just got worse..
