  • W110 'Heckflosse' revival

    Previously introduced myself here: http://www.stanceworks.com/forums/sh...ad.php?t=57690

It's been a love-**** relationship with this car in the almost 5 months since I rescued her from rotting away behind a Ford dealership.

The short story on that was some lady from Portland owned the car and drove it often, blew up the motor in 2005, had a shop swap in the motor it has now (1.9L gas), and sold or traded it in to the Ford dealership here in town in August 2011. It then sat until this last March when a friend who worked there convinced the sales manager to sell it to me for a steal.

Since then, I've put surprisingly enough not a lot of money into it getting her back on the road, but there's still a long way to go, many setbacks, and an alarming lack of info out there on pre-1970's Benzos.

Front left brake and hub has been completely disassembled and put back together with new parts- rotor, pads, caliper seals, and wheel bearings. That fixed the seized front left caliper and the shot rotor and I haven't gotten around to doing it all over again with the front right yet. The main engine issue I'm faced with as of now is that she continually leaks oil from the valve cover, both from a hairline crack next to the oil filler and along the entire gasket. I need to try some gasket sealant, but only after I take the time to adjust the valves first. One of these days I need to acquire the proper sized jets for the carb and start replacing all the cracked hoses in the engine bay. And then I can start worrying about body work and air!

Minus the pissing oil everywhere, the few days I've braved to take her out have been some of the most fun I've had in a car!

There's just something about getting the thumbs up and smiles from random people at the sight of a rusty, dented, straight pipe Benz that makes it all worth it.

Oh and I also picked these wheels up after getting the Benz, the guy who sold me them thought they were 15x8 ET0 and he didn't know the bolt pattern, or who even made them (I got them for cheap).

Turns out they're apparently Enkei EK62's, 5x114.3, and 14x7. I haven't figured out the offset but the more I look at them the more I want to try and get them on the Benz! I'm not excited at the idea of finding hubcentric rings and wobble bolts but I might just have to try!

And here's the last exhaust clip I've taken so far (I need to go get one driving around):

Good to see you are restoring it. I love these.

Please don't put lame ass "dapper" stickers and other bullshit all over it.

Well thank you kindly! Someone had to save a fintail from dying a slow cancerous death, why not me?

The speedometer is probably the coolest thing about the dash, it goes upward, starts with yellow at low speed, goes to yellow/red striped, and turns full on red above 40mph!

Haha I'm not about those crews or stancefams or whatever. My local enthusiast club sticker will likely be the biggest piece of vinyl on it. I'm still tempted to do an #AMGlol sticker

Yesterday I got my hands on some Mustang Foxbody springs. I've been told a story on how a friend helped one of his friends stick a set under his W114 and it lowered the car 5-6" while maintaining good handling and ride comfort. Sounds too good to be true but I'm gonna give it a shot this weekend and see what happens.

Few months ago I finally found an electronic ignition kit that would work and swapped it to EI. Best thing I've ever done. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fR5mvgVmJrM

Lastly I'm beginning to look into trying to split those Enkei's. I'm reading that some wheel manufacturers used silver colored sealant to look like welds and you can pop them off yourself? I would love to split these apart to redo the centers and look into bigger lips and such!

Oh yeah, and just for good measure, this is not only my inspiration car but a possible motor donor if "Hardtail Sally" ends up getting a small block swapped in!

And I might have to buy these mock/test fit skirts from him when he has the finished product made...

Thanks! Front hub all disassembled, the Foxbody springs are half an inch smaller in diameter than stock so they should work. I just need to figure out what needs to come apart to do the front- the rears supposedly as easy as unbolting shock, remove spring, and reverse!

Every time I see a W110, I die a little inside knowing that my W115 will never be as cool. Hats off for starting another one, I'm a big fan of Hardtail Sally too.

You can find them! I saw a post of in WA State for $3200 in great shape. Green on black I believe it was, W110. The major issue with owning this vintage is finding parts and information. I've gotten lucky on getting rebuild parts through my work (VW dealer, my parts guy is a genius) and for cost +10% which has saved me around $300 already!

My instagram is the same username as here haha.

You know what's funny is that my first interest in getting a pre-80's Benz started with this car:

It carried my friend (pictured) home from the hospital and for the last 5+ years has been sitting in that exact spot rotting away. I wanted to save it but it's in seriously rough shape. If you live in the NW area and want to save it, it can be yours for $300 (I can arrange the sale, my friend's mom holds the title), I would if I could fund another revival and had the space for another Benz!

I was planning on buying that 1971 and then this 1976 240D:

The plan was to convert the 76 to the 71's pre DOT regulation spec bumpers and part out the 71. I was waiting on a retirement check (no I'm not actually retired, it's a long story lol) from the State for months and months, on Thanksgiving day last year I received a text from my old co-worker (whose dad owned the 76 and I promised/kept in touch that I would have money soon and would buy it outright) that he had just sold it. A week later I received my check.

I then took that money, 6 months later, and bought this fintail with it. One week changed 10 years!

I love W115s too, especially the front end! Not to mention W115s are racecars compared to these little ol' 1.9/2.0L engines haha

And I'm getting all nostalgic about mossy cars. So here's the fancy picture I took after bringing home the finny (and the license plates were on the car that carried ME home from the hospital- I couldn't get them transferred over to the Benz sadly... I wanted to and may use them as show/parade plates, expiration date is lol)
