  • Nissan Skyline 350GT (G35) + karting

Hey all. First time i have been back on this forum for quite a while. Some of you may have seen the start to my old project, my Toyota Altezza. Anyway, im Andy from New Zealand.

Since creating that thread (that virtually went nowhere) i have been the owner of a 03 Nissan Skyline 350GT Coupe. Essentially, it is a Infiniti G35 Coupe. Just the JDM version.

I bought the car in late 2013 and have future plans for it. Including a turbo kit + 6 speed Z box.

When i got the car, it looked just like this one. Stock as stock goes. The only thing it had was tinted windows.

Since then i have done the following.

    - Painted the headlight inners black and sanded/UV protected the front lights.
    - Changed the 10000k HIDs it had to 6000k.
    - Removed the Skyline & 350GT badges
    - Painted the "rear diffuser" plastic
    - Painted the grill black to suit the lights
    - Put some 19x9.5 Vossen CV3 reps on (temp wheels)
    - Remove stock resonator and replaced with a CAI
    - Added a HKS Super panel filter
    - Made a good quality grounding kit and fitted

What i will be ordering shortly:

    - Motordyne 5/16 Plenum spacer
    - Fujitsubo Catback exhaust
    - Gialla style bootlip spoiler or the stock surfboard spoiler
    - Wider wheels
    - Gloss black roof wrap
    - Coilovers
    - Camber arms
    - Toe arms

These are the wheels i bought:

    Late night test fit:

    Fitted:

Ground kit made/fitted. CAI & Filter fitted also:

In the long run i am also going to be doing a +T conversion using the VQ30DET manifolds.

I am going to be using VQ30det manifolds for the build. (Thankful for NZ having access to RHD VQ30DET vehicles).

The manifolds will not be modified. The turbo position is going to remain in the lower position like the VQ25DET & VQ30DET. This will be achievable with the use of a HKS 3037 like the HKS Single Turbo kit. Surprisingly enough, HKS simply used the VQ25/30DET manifolds for their kits Nice!

I found out a fair amount of info on the HKS Single Turbo setup so i plan to base my kit around theirs.

HKS Single Turbo Kit - 350z/G35 approx 270rwkw-300rwkw (360rwhp-400rwhp approx.)

The last thing i want to do is have to do this twice so im going to be spending a little more more money on the turbo and waste gate setup.

Calculating the build costs it looks a little like this. Take into account this is with QUALITY core parts and is an estimate from current prices here in NZ:

    VQ30det manifold - $50
    HKS 3037 Turbo - $700
    Turbosmart OR HKS 60mm wastegate - $500
    Intercooler & Piping - $400
    Hoses/Fittings - $100
    Deatschwerks Injectors - $300
    Deatschwerks fuel pump - $155
    Oil pan spacer - $180
    Oil feed lines/Return lines - $125
    Catch can setup - $80
    Sparkplugs - $80
    AM Radiator - $200
    Genuine HKS BOV - $80

Approx. total before tune = $2,950 NZD ($2449 USD)

That is less than what i have seen the Turbonetics kits going for
Not quite pennies but very reasonable for a supposedly reliable and well put together kit.

There are a couple of the things which you could strip back if you were wanting to be on a very tight budget such as the radiator and oil pan spacer etc.

Here is a shot of the rear after the "diffuser" area was painted and the rear badges were removed (minus the Nissan badge)

Got to work on my wheels. From this:

    To this:

I gave the G35 an oil change...turns out it was overdue poor thing had crappy thick oil from the previous owner and it was looking mighty dark.

My own fault for not changing it as soon as i bought the car. Running much nicer now with Agip UltraSyn 5W-30

Gave it a clean and discovered a new dent. God damn it. (look beside the drivers door)

The mrs splashed out on me for a new sounds setup

I installed a double din touch screen android head unit which will be powering a set of 6 inches up front, unsure what i want to run in the rear & 1x 580w RMS Boshman sub powered by a Pioneer mono amp. Nothing special but more than enough for what i need.

I used the Metra dash kit to mount it. I have also kept the factory nav unit.

After dealing with the crappy stock cd stacker setup for the last year (limited to 1 station here in NZ), this is a breath of fresh air.

Photos to come of the whole setup when i have it all back together and cleaned. (Ignore the stereo surround. I hadn't fitted it all up properly prior to recording )

G35 Android headunit - YouTube - Unsure why the video wont display?

A big thumbs up for this Chinese Android unit. Easy to install, nice interface & includes everything you would need. The 3G + Wifi is also a nice feature.

I will be buying a steering wheel from a wrecked 250gt/300gt/350gt that has stereo controls & a reverse camera. As this head-unit has steering wheel functionality & wiring with it for both the wheel controls + reverse cam.

Heres a video of the screen quality also. I had low expectations for the screens clarity.

Current state of the car. Just on factory shocks & springs with the shock mount modification.

MORE UPDATES TO COME SOON. LOW IS COMING. DONT STRESS!

Now for the Karting side of things. Unsure if there is anything like this in the US etc but im pretty sure there is racing over in Europe?

Anyway, this is my hobby. Grass Kart Racing. Essentially, it is taking a track kart, stripping the road gear off it, putting in a thicker axle, adding beadlocked wheels, change the steering setup, add a couple of bars here and there, then strap a MX bike engine to it. Then proceed to have stupid amounts of fun.

    The kart:

Suzuki RM125 motor strapped to a circuit track kart setup for Grass/Dirt/Mud racing and the occasional road racing. Approx. 110-130kmh (approx 75mph) on the long straights.

The Mrs waiting for the ladies class. She won the South Island Womens champs. She usually races against us guys and gives a majority of us trouble...

This ugly mug racing against some of the country folk at a practice meet: (hence the long ass grass)

    Some of our racing:

Hill Climb: (Needed better gearing as i ran out of pace on the straights at 142kmh)

My wee 125 showing a 250 that size doesn't matter...and a 450cc showing me it does. This is a good wee battle. Sadly the 250 held me back from the 450 for a little too long.

Karts look super fun. What wheels are you thinking? Taking the car in any particular direction? (sporty, VIP, Drift etc)

No direction in particular. I guess you could say im going for a low and clean business car look? haha.

I was looking at building up some Work Rezax II to 19x10.5 +12 and 19x11 +0 but looks like that is out the window.

I am starting up a business so i wont be splashing out on such expensive parts for now.

Currently looking at getting some Niche Verona's. From what ive read, i believe they are a rep of Vossen? However, unlike most rep wheels, i have no problem with. As Vossen wheels are reasonably crap in their own right. You pay a pretty penny for a cast wheel that weighs a tonne.

Dont get it twisted though, im all for genuine wheels

        Niche Verona - 20x10 front 20x10.5

This Aristo gives you an idea of how concave the 10.5's are.

Off topic but how was the Beams 3sge you had in the Altezza in terms of reliability, maintenance, power, etc? I have been eyeing them up for an old Corona I began building but haven't heard much from former/current owners.

Sorry for the late reply boss. The 3sge was a good wee engine. Sadly they severly lack lower end torque/power. The 200hp is in the top end.

              Reliability - Very good
              Maintenance - Very good
              Power - For a 2L N/A pretty good

In an older car like a Corona, id imagine it would be a lot of fun.

              @Z33_Taxi - I can understand why!

Heres one of the races from the weekend just gone.

Speedway/special stage racing. Ridiculously fast and fun. One of the guys in the 250cc behind me in this video was reading 103kmh (65mph) on the sweeper

Unsure of the top/average speed but it was stupid fast. Wheels were screeching, wheels coming off the ground off the line in one of the other races.
Check out how fast the cones are going past to get an idea of the pace.
