  • Project E-Dirty: The Budget Drift Build.

After covering media for various drift events for a good while I decided it was time to make a drift car of my own. This will by no means be a quick build, this will by no means be a expensive build (or at least for now thats not the plan...hopefully), but it should be fun so I got that going for me.

I'm also still in highschool so thats the reason why everything might move a little slow lol.

On to the car. When I first began scouring craigslist for a suitable car I was jumping back and forth between the standard 240sx's, RX-7's, etc etc but nothing came up for quite awhile. What I initially wanted was an E30 but in northern california they usually cost alot more then I wished to spend, but I got lucky and contacted a dude about his 1986 325es for sale within 9 minutes of him posting it. I went to check it out, test drove it, and bought it...awesome.

The car was a steal. Two owners, 80k miles on the engine, passed smog with flying colors, and really has no mechanical issues of note so far. Of course there are a few exterior issues like the missing valence, some dings, and clearcoat issues. But nonetheless I'm extremely happy with this car as a starting point.

Back down to limited funds I decided to do a cheap mod and see what the kidneys would look like black.

Here it is with its shitty mask job next to my daily wagon.

    And heres the final product.

As you can see theres some minor damage to the fender, but I lucked out and found another bronzit E30 at pick-n-pull with a mint fender and will soon be replacing the current one.

I really like the ES/IS wheel it has in it. I'm still planning on putting in some sort of woodgrain wheel but part of me wants to keep this in it.

I'll take some more pictures of the car soon enough. Next big purchase to make for the car will be a set of coilovers. I also have a friend who is swapping a new engine into his E36 so I'm toying with the idea of taking the old non-vanos M50 (for the high price of one burrito), rebuilding it, and putting a turbo on it, but I'll get to that when the engine is out.

I got lucky and found a guy selling the correct valence for $100 about an hour away! totally stoked on this, same color and everything.

Again I'll take some real photos soon lol. For now it's just ziptied on until I decide to get around to mounting it.

I noticed the idle was pretty jumpy so I decided to clean the ICV to see if it solved anything. I quickly learned about BMW's stupid one time use hoseclamp type devices. A grinder made quick work of them.

      ICV was pretty dirty.

Replaced the hose clamps (seriously fuck those one time use ones)
      .

Gave em both a good wash and wax for good measure.

The idle is now SUPER smooth. Glad it was just the dirty ICV for now.

Small update: Been slowly doing some bodywork etc to get it ready for fresh paint.

Never really done bodywork before lol so I'm learning as I go (slowly).

This putty looks suspiciously like american cheese...

Also picked up a complete 05 WRX wagon interior for my bugeye, should probably start a thread for this car as well.
