  • So I finally got one ! BMW E30 Convertible

Hey everyone! And welcome to my build thread for my E30 Convertible, I'm 18 and always have wanted to own one, due to the insurance costs over here in the UK.
It's not as easy to get one insured as a first car. So, my first car is a Renault Clio MK1.

Now after owning it for nearly a year, I started looking for a E30. I have found this one on the forums, and instantly went to have a look at it, bought it and came to pick it up 1 week later.

It's a 1991 Convertible 318i, it's quite rough but that's pretty much what I wanted. Something I can restore and learn stuff while doing it. Currently its registered as Cat C, as a lorry has backed into it and left a nasty dent in the rear quarter panel, I'm guessing the repair was estimated for more than whats the car worth.

The last owner of the car has bought it off an auction hoping to have restored it one day. But, from what I know he has bought a house and nowadays he simply hadn't had the time to do so. Some of the main bad points of the car are, the rear quarter panel, leaking power steering, few more rusty bits there and there, corroded brake lines and such. One of the other things the car failed its MOT on was "passenger's side windscreen washer not providing sufficient liquid" As you can see in the above picture, the rear window doesn't fully seal, that's one of the things that will need checking out as well.

Another thing that's bugging me is the front valence, looks like it's a bit dented and I'm not sure if that dent will pull out or is there a option of welding in a new part?

Moving on to the interior, I think it's in quite good condition. Apart from one tiny cigarette burn mark which is funnily enough on the rear seat, and one tiny crack on the dashboard.
    It's in quite good condition.

Not sure if that's the original radio, but atm it doesn't work anyway.

Now, the engine. It's in quite a state, the engine bay looks very yellow. My dad told me its sort of a protective coat people use to put on back in the days.

Quite happy there is no rust near the windscreen area, I'v seen some E30's with quite bad rust around those areas.

So to sum up, this is my E30 in a rather sorry state atm. But hopefully, in a few months this will change. My main plans are to make a nice fun daily driver, I want to polybush all suspension, use quality coilovers etc and in the future hopefully do a M50/M52 swap.

Also, as you guys probably noticed all my pictures are in FILM. I want to try do all my updates with my film camera for that 90's feel.

Btw, the Mercedes in my signature was my dad's/mine lil project. Unfortunately it got sold, as dad needed the money for house restoration :/

    Thank you for reading

Looks great man. With the front valence you are better off just buying another one that is straight. They aren't too hard to swap out and you can never really get the dents pulled out completely straight.

And the yellow stuff is a major pain it the ass. One of my e30s had it and I could never get it to come off.

Your photography is perfect! What camera and film are you using? What lens? Any tips on how these are turning out so nicely?

Thanks for the tip, I'v looked at some, their less expensive then I thought. The yellow stuff should just hopefully sand off when I refresh the engine bay.

Thank you man ! I'm using a olympus az-330 superzoom with some cheap £1 film. The lens on this is a 38-105mm 1:4, 5-6. It's pretty much just point and shoot as it's a smart camera, once I get them developed on the CD I usually just upload them how they are. Film has that magic feel to it all on its own haha

              Update #2

It's been good weather in Manchester this week so it would be rude not to start off the work on the E30. I started off by stripping the interior

              Got the dashboard out

Only had time to take dashboard, door cards and little bits out on Monday. So continuing tuesday morning

Even managed to find £1.06 while doing it! Car's actually cost me £348.94

Some more random photos took throughout

Got a new sticker for the daily, why so SERIOUS?!

Because that's a boring ass update, I thought I will throw in some FILM photos I took at the Ultimate Dubs event I went to on Sunday.

              Sitting in heavy ass traffic.

MK5 on the parking lot aired out

Sorry about the dump of photos, but thanks for viewing

Little update, I'v not been doing much since the last update since I'v done insurance quotes and there was no chance of me getting insured on it at all... Now though I want to try and get it ready as next summer there might be a little chance of getting it insured. Just recently Iv jet washed all the interior and started putting it back in, straightened the quarter panel and started doing the filler work. Once this is ready I want to weld up the worst area of the rust, underneath the rear bumper on the left. I have also tested the BBS reps i originally bought for the vert that im currently using on the clio to sort of get the feel of how it can look and get some motivation.

Liking this view, could just leave it like that and let it be a drift slag
