  • A Goldwing build

Yep that's right I bought your granddad's bike, I look incredible. Lol not really but this should be fun. Bought this fat cow up for pretty cheap and want to see what I can do with it for as little extra cash as possible. Have lower shocks, clip-ons and new lights on order.

First major project was strictly diet related. This bike had roughly 200+ lbs of useless crap bolted to every corner. There was literally a 40 lb lead counterweight bolted to the front forks to offset the trunk and hard bags. Everything about the bike was heavy. Got rid of most of it then ordered some parts to get the bike lower and lighter.

Sorry for the lack of picks, My hands were nasty so I didn't break the camera out. I'll post more current pics tomorrow so better show where the bike is now. Here's some inspiration until then

Whatever you do, please keep the dual seats.

I always liked how long the gas tanks look on the gold wing, and the dual seats make it seem super long.

The weather sucked today so i never got a chance to roll it out and get work done, nor did I take any pictures. I did however spend some cash! Picked up some shorty shocks to slam the rear, a little header wrap, a new (much smaller) integrated tail/brake light and some stubby turn indicators. Would love to start the body work and paint but its just too cold. Expect small updates until the weather warms up

Oh and a little more inspiration. Check out this custom build with weber downdrafts. Love that boxer sound with those carbs

And this crazy custom supercharged build

So weather has finally started to warm up, that means I got a chance to do some yard work, After I finished that the wife let me tinker with the bike some

Anyways, got everything installed and also got the front end lowered.

              What's done:
              Tail light installed
              clip-ons installed
              new pipes built
              blinkers installed
flipped the gauge bracket to sit everything lower
washed the engine to prep for paint

              What needs to be done/finished
              wiring for new lights
              bleed brakes and clutch
paint engine (block and heads will me metallic black, valve covers will be wrinkle black with polished detail)
figure out a color for the tank and wheels
              wrap exhaust
              de-winterize

Also considering re-working the controls. I'm not happy with the way the master sits and all the cables are way to long now that the old bars are gone.

Anyways, here's some progress. Crappy cell pics because it's already beer time.

Today made a little more progress. I started to paint the engine and managed to get one of the pipes wrapped before my hands gave out. Also painted the rear drive and carbs to match the block.

The block is VHT hi-temp metallica black pearl and the timing and valve covers are VHT black wrinkle+

The hardware will stay chrome and the raised lines and details on the covers will be sanded back to aluminum.

I'm thinking the tank, covers and rear fender will end up being a tan color to tie back in with the header wrap.

Motor is painted and back together now, all that's left is to solder the connections for the new blinkers and tail light, re-wrap the harness, spray the tank and side covers and bleed the brakes.

Started it up for the first time this winter and since starting my little project. Really glad that I took the battery out and left it on a trickle charger. It fired right up and ran/sounds great. Glad I put some fuel treatment in it before storing it, I **** rebuilding carbs lol.

Also I'm really surprised how smooth these motors are. Like I took a shot of the valve cover while it was idling and there's almost no movement.

Its much quicker. Its not a modern sport bike but it'll just almost pick the front tire up if you twist the throttle hard off the line. It has a lot of low end grunt for a non vtwin but it's still heavy but most of the weight is low. The boxer engine has a low center of gravity and the fuel tank is below the seat so everything is very low centered.

I think if you reworked the forks or swapped all the suspension bits with some modern parts and stripped it down even lighter, like just bare bones, these bikes would make decent curve carving budget bikes.

You can pick them up on CL for dirt cheap usually

Did some more work this week. Weather has been in the mid 70's so its hard to not be outside doing something.

Anyways, I scuffed up all the body panels and did a little amateur body work filling in the little imperfections here and there as well as shaving the lock on the tank. It was huge and ugly plus I'd lost the key when I sold the saddle bags and trunk.

Then sticking with the textured theme of the bike I shot everything with a couple of coats of desert sand tough liner. Turned out really nice considering how hard the crap was to spray.

Rolled everything outside after it dried all night to cure in the sun and took a few quick pictures. I tried to take a few artsy shots but I was too lazy to venture out to the lake, some old abandoned factory or a parking garage like standards dictate.

The red tips are in bloom here right now so I just parked next to it and did my best. still not sure how to use my dslr properly but like all my adventures I'm just figuring it out/making it up as I go.

Since the fuel filler next and card cleaner is inside the tank these two doors are built in to enclose everything. When I shaved the lock they lost their latch. This strap is what I came up with to keep everything shut when you're cruising down the highway and the wind is whipping around. Works really well and add a little uniqueness to the tank I think.

Last but certainly not least, the best feature on the entire bike. Beverage storage! Cup holders are for chumps, this baby holds an entire six pack
