So yeah, when I bought the car in 2010, I drove it home with no working brakes except for the handbrake. When I got the car moving last year, I was too excited to put off driving it till the brakes were done, so I am ashamed to admit that I continued driving it with no brakes all of last summer. I kept my distance from cars, and was white-knuckling it you know.... good times. Sometimes I would mash on the brakes and feel them try to work, and grind pretty bad. Needless to say, I knew I'd be working on them as soon as winter hit. I finally tore into them, and saw the pads in this condition:
That was the grinding noise. Apparently the previous owner drove it like that too, cause the whole rotor was worn at an angle, consistent with the wear on the backing of the non-existent brake pad. I already knew I'd be needing new rotors, so here is a comparison.
After I took the calipers off, I realized why the brake pads were wearing at an angle. Half of the brake pistons in the caliper were rusted frozen. Found a local guy willing to rebuild my calipers so I dropped them off to him, and bought a reverse-speed-bleeder (have never bled brakes myself before), fluid, etc. Few weeks later got the calipers back and for the first time, I have working brakes..... what a treat.
You need money when there are no tires on the Meisters. It only makes sense.
i have listed my current wheels for sale locally. once they sell, car will go up on jack stands and funds will be allocated towards wider lips for the rears, and a fresh set of rubbers for all
