  • The Slow Car/Slow Build Thread

This is my progress thread for my 2002 VW Golf TDI

This was my first car. Originally owned by my dad then handed down to me.

    Lets begin.

It was stock for the first year or so I had my license.

B&G RS2 coils were then installed

Then came the first set of wheels

    BBS CH Black Editions

Fast forward a few years and we have the CCW LM5T's

No photos of the install but, Mikey (CubbyChowder) helped install a Audi TT front sway to finally rid the car of axle rub.

IDF rear drop camber plates were installed. Haven't had the time to do a proper shoot so phone photos are all I have at the moment.

My brother took the car out one night. He decided it was a good idea to drive around his friends in back, knowing there was VERY little clearance.
    Burnt both sides pretty good.

A bit of prep work and sanding. It was all good.

Then the eLevel management showed up.
Going with the eLevel, 444c, 3 gallon seamless tank, NEW Mk4 AirLift Performance front struts, SS-5 rear bags.

All to be installed next coming weekend. Eager to see how these new fronts struts perform. Adjustable camber up front is a HUGE plus. Retaining the dampening adjustable like my B&G's have is great as well.
Already have plans to either run a larger tank or two 3 gallon seamless as a single one is pretty small. Slight miscalculation on my end.

Depending on how the rear sits after the bag install, another -1* camber shim may be added to the IDF plate.

Picked up materials for the trunk setup today. Should be really neat when its all done

Mikey will be doing the install. He's been extremely helpful with this build.

        B&G's out. New struts in

I'll probably need to notch the passenger side

        IDF Brackets installed.

        Rivnuts in

        and brackets

The removable adjustment knobs on the front struts are pretty neat

Frame notch. No shot of the completed piece welded in yet.

          Front sensors in

The bag clearance to the muffler on the rear driver side was too close. Performed the common TDI "mufflerectomy" mod to gain a bit more clearance. I was planning on doing it later down the road anyways.

Looks very nice, clean and simple. One question: Had you considered color-matching the bottom portion of the rear bumper?

Color matching the lowers was big a few years ago, and I always preferred it to the overly expensive Votex kit. Makes you look twice at the car to figure out what's different. Nice TDI.

For all the paint and prep work involved I'd like to find a 25th anniversary TDI rear valence.

I'm hoping so. The pinch welds up at the top of the wheel wells were hammered flat. Hopefully it comes down that last inch.

Fit needs a few minor adjustments to get down that last inch but I'm very happy with how everything turned out.

Big thanks to CubbyChowder, Andrew at Open Road Tuning and Accuair
