  • My 91 GMC Sonoma Build - Track Inspired

First off, I'm Zach. I'm 19 years old out of St Clements, Ontario. I have owned 13 s10's in the last 4 years. This is a build thread for my 1991, which was purchased in the spring of 2012.

The truck is currently in storage, and sits half-together with a warped frame. Here I will start to tell you how I got the truck to where it is now. In a few months, I will be removing the truck from storage and beginning the rebuild, where I will continue the thread.

    Spring 2012:

I purchased this truck from a guy just past Collingwood, Ontario. It was listed for $4000 with a valid safety inspection. Here are a few photos of how the truck sat upon purchase. Excuse me for the poor pictures, my Mom took them while I was looking at the truck.

You'll notice that the truck happens to be badged as a Chevy S10. The title says GMC Sonoma, which is what it rolled off the assembly line as. 2 owners before me, the guy rebuilt the truck from the frame up. Sometime before that it was imported from Atlanta, Georgia. The builder moved the engine and transmission back about 1" to help with weight distribution to the rear a tad. He painted the whole truck a bright Red (burgundy from factory), and lowered the truck using 2" Spindles, 2" Coils, pulled a leaf and added 4" angled blocks with slapper bars. The truck sat on 16x8 and 16x7 American Racing TorqThrusts.

The first couple days of owning it, I swapped the grille and bumper to some I had laying around. Also removed the hood to fix the windshield nozzle issue.

The truck was a handful of fun. I literally beat the life out of it, burnouts and drifting and such. Not a week goes by and I start hearing a minor knock. Well, she's already blown, may as well have fun with it before pulling it. Heard a good bang mid-slide, stock 4.3L's don't like being at 6k as you'll see shortly.

I was lucky enough to be able to use the shop in our backyard at home. We pulled the truck in and began teardown immediately. Had the motor and tranny out in a matter of a few hours.

I picked up a bare block from a friend of mine, and took it to Twin City in Kitchener, ON to be built by Don. I had it bored .030 and cleaned up. Don then assembled the rest of the shortblock for me. He sold me 4.030 dish pistons on rods for a price not worth passing up, as well as a pre-machined crank for the same price as machining the crank I had. Purchased a set of stock 74cc heads from a local. They had recently been checked for guides and such, and did me just fine.

While the truck was apart, I decided to strip the front suspension and clean/paint everything including firewall. I shaved some minor screw holes and such while I was at it. I also relocated the washer fluid hose from the centre to under the clutch resevoir on the side to help clean things up.

I sprayed the frame rails with rubberized rockerguard, and just used semi-gloss engine enamel on the suspension, firewall and remaining engine bay.

Finished off the motor with a new oil pan, Holley 650cfm with vacuum secondaries and electric choke, mild COMP cam with hyrdaulic lifters, and a basic Edelbrock intake. I also decided to go with full MSD ignition including a 6AL-2 ignition box with 2-step rev limiter.

Did some mock-up, fit right in with the mounts.

The thing I love about carb motors? I thinned out the bay harness to a couple wires...

Got it running and pulled er out.

I had the exhaust done at Autopsy Custom & Repair in Waterloo, ON. I used 2.5" stainless with spun catalytic converters and Flowmaster Delta 50's for a nice deep rumble.

I met up with Dave Levitt of Cambridge, ON for a photo shoot. He personally drives a slammed Subaru Impreza WRX wagon. He shot these photos of my truck in it's prime, after I sold the TorqThrusts and installed my 17x8 American Racing TorqLite's.

Unfortunately, the day of the shoot when I washed the truck, some water got into the ignition box and caused me a handful of problems. I had it towed to a friend's house for diagnosis because I wasn't sure what happened at the time. Colour matched my towtruck for fun.

Got it back up and running with a borrowed HEI distributor while I sent my MSD in for replacement, which Marken Performance did with no hassle.

Here are a few pictures of the multiple uses I had for the truck. I did everything BUT baby it. The StreetScene hidden hitch came real handy. It tucks behind the rollpan and the license plate flips down to use it.

I towed my blazer 200km to Barrie, ON. I gave up on this project and it had to go to make room.

I also used it to pick up my 1978 Datsun 620. I unfortunately sold this truck to make sure I worked on the 91 instead of the Datsun. Mistake.

One of MANY burnouts done by this truck. Line-lock helped on this one.

      And some more...

If it's worth doing, it's worth doing right.

Honestly, it towed amazing. The rear was super stiff because of the slapper bars (yes, Improper I know) and because of the single axle trailer it all balanced really well. I actually passed a civic on a back road doing 140km/h with the blazer behind me. Funniest feeling.

Thanks guys! More to come, had to sleep last night.

Thanks guys. I've yet to post the recent build info. I'd call it progress but I fucked up and have to start over... Full force updates in the spring, but in limbo until then.

Spring is HERE. A huge thanks to Mr. "hoowybrow" for picking up my truck from winter storage. Here's a shot with his absolutely badass 2014 Sierra dropped 4.5 up front and 7 in the rear.

I currently have the truck parked in the back room of my shop. I don't want to get overspray on it, so she's hiding until I have money and motivation.

As for the shop, things are coming along great. Have made plenty of minor changes, one of which being all new lighting. MUCH better. Here's a panorama from the bench corner.

I also recently built my own sheetmetal brake. It's basically built out of overpriced angle iron and a basic pipe hinge.

I made some purchases over the winter as well.
Spohn tubular control arms to compliment my QA1 coilovers (yet to be purchased, again)

I also ordered a Little Shop of Horrors no-toe steering kit to correct bumpsteer on a lowered truck. Should make a huge improvement when it comes to steering response I hope. Here's an internet picture of said kit

Excited to get wrenching on the truck again.
