  • Want Your Build Featured?

    Hey guys,

Me and a buddy just started up a website stancerepublic.com dedicated to presenting builds/projects to an audience. Sort of like what stancenation.com does (except we feature more realistic/common builds).

If you want a little article written on your build like this one here, then send us an email at thestancerepublic@gmail.com. We would love to see what you got (doesn't matter if you don't think your build is "good" enough).

FYI, our website is still under construction, it does not represent final product.

Attention to mods: please move this thread to the appropriate section.

Sorry you feel this way. Maybe this was the wrong way to go about it but what is your reason for saying this?

Yes, I know. It's hard to come up with a definition of "stance" but I just used it as a placeholder for now to make the website feel more complete. The website was created two days ago so there isn't much content yet. Do you have a better definition?

On the other hand, thanks to those of you that emailed us. All of them just received a reply.

What does Stance Works think of this idea? Please use constructive criticism rather than just saying it's "stupid".

I like it. However, I do think it needs more attention to the article itself, rather than just the pictures. Think about using more descriptive adjectives, as the ones used feel far to commonly used in the "stance" scene (or whatever you would like to call it). I enjoy reading lengthier articles about each picture, instead of just the history on the owner and the car. Just about every car related blog I've ever read has a similar writing style and I believe the mold should be broken if you plan on getting any more publicity. I am by no means an expert, or a writer. Just an opinion from a kid. If you ever need help writing anything, I would be more than glad to help. Just PM me or something. Good luck!

Thanks for the advice! I will definitely take that into consideration. The owner of the e30 I just featured sent me some engine bay shots so I'll start there with being more descriptive of what's under the hood.

If I need your help, I will be sure to give you a pm.

I think what he's complaining about is that threads like these begging attention to a competing website are generally frowned-upon and seen as kind of shameless. You're going to find that a common sentiment.

Some thoughts on the website, recognizing it's not a final product:

              1. I like the name for a site that is going to feature more down-to-earth builds.

              2. Maybe it's 'cause I live in Portland and I'm absolutely drowning in hipster bullshit, but the graphic design is just painfully hip. I half expected to see the text "Purveyors of Finest Stance since 2013" somewhere on the site.

              3. "Form > Function" is an immediate turn-off for me. Maybe I'm alone in this, maybe I'm not.

              4. Stance as it's being used in the site's name is an adjective, not a verb. Just delete the definition section. Nothing good can come of it.

              5. The slide-down big picture feature thing on the main page is irritating. I don't mind that it exists, I mind that by the time it loads and does its animation I'm already scrolled halfway down the page and it moves what I was looking for down by half a screen. Can the animation.

              6. Maybe consider a different article layout. Your text blurbs are short enough that it's sort of irritating how they're broken up by such large expanses of images. Either the images want to be smaller, or off to the side, or something.

              7. Grammar stuff in the articles.

              8. Tags and hashtags are so fucking passé.

              9. I like the responsive design.

              10. If you can avoid a "fill in the form" contact us page, I would totally do it. If I have a question about something and I find one of those on a website, I just assume it goes to an inbox that Nancy in Accounting is supposed to check but never does. Cmd-W and I go somewhere else. Maybe you want to transition that into an "about us" kind of page with contact info and some bios on who the hell you guys are?

              11. Sans-serif body text isn't the easiest to read. StanceWorks uses what looks like Georgia on the forums, which I think is pretty successful.

              12. What's the difference between "Featured" and "Showcase?"

              13. Sell me on why your site needs a forum. What happens there that's different than here?

Sorry if that sounds like a wall of complaints – it's not intended to be. I generally quite like the graphic design, but I think your site's biggest challenge is going to be proving that it needs to exist. What do I get there that I don't get in a more interactive way by trolling the build threads on here?

EDIT: MoHNKE's comments on article style are spot on. Back when it still existed, Nissan Performance Magazine used to do featured cars with a combination of a short editorial on the car with an extended interview with the owner. It was a pretty successful format, if I remember correctly.

Wow! Thanks for the informative post. I will look at each and every on of your suggestions, and make a decision on a change. I appreciate the time you took to give insightful feedback

That will be the biggest challenge. I feel that I'm still developing the main idea of my site. And I'm still trying to come up with ways that make my site different. My site will probably change frequently in the next couple months as I find what the "unique factor" will be.

You are advertising a website that wants to compete with the website you're posting it on, how is that complicated to understand? It's like playing a Chevy commercial in a BMW dealership.
