  • A Group 4 Tribute

So here is the story. My first car was a 1997 Audi A4 Quattro. It was only 9 years old when I got it, so while my friends were driving around in bet up Corollas and Ford pickups I had this new luxury car. I loved it. Drove it like it was a damn race car until one day in 2009 I hit a tree and my dad sold it. A few short years of bliss.

This sparked an obsession for me, which I didn't acknowledge until recently. I had numerous cars since then, none of which I cared much for. In May, I found it. I watched this car on Craigslist for months. I loved it. Intensely. Alas, the car was at home in Georgia and I was working in Maryland with no chance of going home soon. A friend of mine bought the car for me in August, and I paid him back the next week. She was mine.

I introduce to you, Charlotte. She is a 1988 Audi 90 Quattro. 10v inline 5, manual 5 speed transmission, all wheel drive. <3

I picked it up, drove it around and bought new tires. On the way to see my brother the alternator belt broke and the car died on the highway. We quickly replaced it, as well as the old battery and ground wire. And it didn't start. So we towed it home and there it sat.

While I was back in Maryland, I purchased a Sparco and mounts to be put into the car once I got back. In October I came home for a couple weeks, replaced the starter and she ran. Rough, but she ran. I installed the Sparco in the car, which wasn't easy since they don't make mounts for this car.

Just some shit in the way.

Not pretty, but a safe temporary fix.

Wrapped the roof in matte black vinyl for fun one day.

I brought her back with me to Maryland, leaving with only 62k original miles!

After a week of driving it, the rough idle was getting worse and I overheated once. I did a thorough tune up, including spark plugs, wires, oil change, all new filters and a radiator flush.

New plugs next to the original plugs.

Now its running well, and I've almost finished all the general maintenance work, so more modifications can come soon. I'm a going for a Group 4 look with the vehicle, something like this.

Probably can't. I welded a turtle to the fridge one time though.

                      Fuck.

I'm already on top of the battle for damages, plus looking for Round 2.

To make a long story short I was in the right lane. A Mercedes turned left, much like that Taurus is, but stayed in both lanes. There was a man in a Charger about 50-60 feet in front of me slammed on the brakes to avoid hitting the car, and I did as well. 2008 brakes are much better than 1988 brakes. A witness said I turned right to jump the curb and avoid him, but still hit the guy at about 55.

I got contact info from Merc, Charger and Witness. Charger's insurance isn't going after me for damages, and my insurance is saying they will go after Merc as well. So maybe I'll be able to get something out it. NOTE TO SELF: Don't buy liability again.
