  • Del sol weekend track?/DD build

Hows it going guys? I wana start off by saying this build will not be slammed and "stanced" mike my last 2 build cars. I understand this is a "stanced" themed site but im more posting here because ive posted my builds here before. And I love the feed back, and the attitude of the whole site!

    Heres a little about myself....

My name is Cody, im 21 years old, I live in Virginia with my girlfriend and Dashound. I got my first car when i was 15 (which was a del sol) and sold it about a year ago. (i have the hafe ass build threr on this site).

Moving on.....the major "specs" of the car

    - Good body no rust bairly any dents (vouge silver met.)
    - Smallist decent engine honda made (no vtec)
    - The whole car is 100% stock except the aftermarket headlights
    - I am the second owner (elder folks had it)

If you have any comment or conserns limi know, I love feedback.

WELL HERE WE GO! Yep the car has high milage, but im the second owner and thats the way I like it. the car is mecanicly sound and have found no issues at all.

Heres the engen bay after i powerwashed it, and scrubed brefily.......you shoulda seen it before....

i have an idea if what holor im gana be powdercoating the valve cover, i just dont know when ill have the time or money.....so in the meantime.....

Im gana stick with a crude polished cover for now till i get it powder coated.

    Such ugly old bolts....

Replaced the old bumper bolts, radatior stay bolt and ac shroud stay bolts with these. (once i have the cash ill be investing in some bolt boys V.3)

Changing the smallist thing in a non vtec single cam makes a huge differance. ARC majic intake i had laying around from past builds. its a very crude moc up, and looks kinda geto, but it works and once i have the time and money ill get it color matched and fitted the best way.

A nice lil back up shot of how the bay is coming together.

Havent really posted a body shot of the car yet, heres one in comparason to how the engin is now (a few hours ago).

Another angle of the bay, take a look at the Orange reflector...?...

no more orange, my first del sol ran these but lost there use after i changed my front in to the jdm front.

Now lets hed to the inside of this basicly mint 97' interior, its just a lil dirty..... Idk who ever keeps this shift knob but I **** it.....I had somthing layin around that actually happens to be my favorite shift knob to this day.....and ill get around to fixing that boot soon.

Yep, Yep.......my favorite knob is a Mugen formula shift knob! Love it, well ballanced and fits my had well.

my second day owning the sol, i got home from work and gave the car a well earned wash and claybar. the prople before me lived back up in the wooed so the car was kinda exposed to paint harmful things....looks at least 45% better id say.

Later in the day i pulled the car in to the garage and gave the hood and the dolphan nose a good waxing, looks like I was able to get a lil bet of shine back. I also installed a licence plate brackit i got from a jdm DC2 front. I **** displaying the front plate, it takes away from the nose. But i guess its better that a $95 dollar ticket....... I cant wait till I have time to wax the whole car and god for bid find some change so i can get my hub caps hydrodiped!!

YES, the car does have the OEM radio!! and weirdly enough wile i was at work a buddy gave me a old RCA/ipod hook up, saves me the $15 for some wrinkle black paint for the fender liners or somthing!

But my mission now it to make it look nice and discreet.....and (lol) yes that is a "jdm" road flare.

Please excule the messy armrest/cup holders I havent had a chance to detail the interior from the precious owner. On another note, i got this idea from a fellow "soler" works really well to keep things discreet.

Look at that, doesnt even look like anything is there...Sept that sweet mugen knob lol.

I wes getting late so i decided to just do some quick detail like things so the sol looks good on my way to work. shined up the tires and inner plastics of the wheel wells.

Wile applying tire shine i noticed that on 2 differant wheels that one wheel had a openended acoen nut and another wheel had a shorti oem bolt (Im suposed to have the long OEM sence i have caps).....and i just so happent i had long hubcap friendly Honda OEM wheel locks! (dont want anyone steeling my 13" rims)

Looky there all shined up and locked up.....I need to save up some cash to get these hydrodipped back to there prime...

Just as I was about to walk out of the garage for the night i looked at my side skirts.......i knew i had some back to black laying aroung somwhere......

Nice and black again....whent ahead and hit all the rubber moldings and seals......

And on that note it was time for me to go to bed! back with more soon!!

Ill leave you with this Picture of a few Mugen parts i have layin around.

Ok guys im back....today i detailed the inside, overall looks better and more enjoyable to drive when the interior is minty.

Remember my ipod hook up? I cleaned it up a lil.

I went ahead an pulled the seats out to get to the carpet and plastics better, but heres what i have to work with....

I do gata say this was a lil gross..............

Well....How bout that, what do you think?

got all the plastics clean and the carpets all nice an new looking.

    Allmost forgot my mats, lol.

    My minty 97' door pannles!

A shot of my formula mugen knob, after I fixed the shift boot and cleaned up some of the dirt and grime off the boot and knob.

Another shot showing how clean i got the Sol...on to some exterior issues/upgrades!!!!

Idk why but my sol was missing the gas cap "popper".....anyway, i was able to grab a clip from work.

One other thing on my to do lit was to remove the richmond honda sticker....

Better right?!?! (its retorical -_- )

Look how bad this aftermarket muffler is.......at least the previous owner got a new one...

cut about an inch and a hafe off.....yes I know the cut is slopy, its the best I could do with what I have. Becides ill be gettin a new exhaust at some point soon anyway.

The cut was pretty bad so i put a em1 exhaust tip over it.....looks kinda like an si exhaust now?? And theres my dog Calcifer!!

to end my night in the garage i thru on a old licence plate bracket i had.....it reduced a good bit of rattle from the plate too.

Im all about OEM/EDM/JDM, but i really liked this change.

    BMW lighter

    A bit of before shots.......

And after, moved some of the main harness around.

Gata rep my man (joey lee) from Stickydiljoe.com

Welcome to the other side of my garage!

the reason its on the lift, the dirty and abused fender wells

After a good power washing and paint

A full shot of the repainted front and rear wells. the back needed it the most.

Sence the car was in the air and I saw the wheels (steelies) were in need of a was and that they were black and silver I painted the face black.

the picture didnt do the well wells and steelies much justice, but it looked way better in person.

Heres a Small update....i like the way it looks and will be sending all the newly black things to get powder coated and hydrodyped gloss black. Also peep thoes legit spoon covers

      Another day another mod.

my curent intake set up just slightly taps the top of the hood so i wana fix that....

ta-da.....i need more spray paint to get it color matched but it looks and fits way better in my oppinion.

      hum....shiny bolt....

      wa-Bam! Tower bar!

Sence the car was on the lift i decided Weight reduction was in order, sence i dont run windshild wipers anyway. (i took the whole system out not just the fluid lol)

every car ive owned has had these brackes missing, broke or freaking bolts stuck in them.....I had an extra licence plate "bracket" in my tool box, and used some heavy duty glue to make sure they dont go anywhere anytime soon.

ok fixed...or kinda fixed...or well better than it was lol.

I think im finaly happy with how my licence plate is...(I **** having a front plate but i cant afford more $96 tickets)

I really really wish you didn't powdercoat that ARC intake.

Other than that, you're doing an excellent job at giving a Del Sol a second shot at life. Keep it up!

The arc isn't powdercoated. Is 1 layer of rattle can. I plan to hydrodip it gloss black, so ether way it is reversable. I thought ahead

How do you not use windshield wipers? It seems kind of dangerous of you to take off safety equipment on a car for negligible gains.

Since you are building the car up for DD and track, remember that hard suspension is not always the best. Your car needs to have adequate suspension travel to be fun on the roads and still post competitive lap times.

As well as that, to achieve a more neutral feeling on a FWD car, and even induce some oversteer, remember that the rear springs should be softer than the front, while having a stiffer sway bar in the rear.

Good luck with the build man, I'll be looking forward to seeing it on those mugen MR5's.

Thanks for the info in the build. I've taken into concederation all mods I've done such as removing my windshield wipers ect. And the spring rate set up I'm looking at getting is set at 350 for the front and rear. (Planning on getting progress coilovers and if I want somthong more upgradeing to a koni/gc custom set up) But I will look into what you were saying about the stiffer in the front spring rates. I do plan on a few roll bars in the back (lower, trunk and "B" puller bars) it just takes a bit of time for it all to be purchased.

I had my elantra suspension setup that way, and it handled amazingly. With a setup like that, lift off oversteer is much easier to achieve, so you need to get used to left foot braking and going balls out through corners at the track.

Stiffening the chassis is always a good route to go. Some people say that the gains are minimal for a light build, but I believe that it really helps out on these lightweight economy/sports cars and negates the effects that aging has had on the car.

ive actually started working on driving technique. watching videos and reading ect. if i can drive this sloppy suspention i should be able to handle a built suspention. (i actually have been working on left foot braking). again thanks for the info, youve been the most help so far.

Got a hold of an DC2 oem strut bar, it fits quite snug. Cant say I feel too much handling increase but there is a little. And recut the intake to fit its best. Havent got around to painting that intake are though.

I know I abuse the sol on the many back roads around my house but come on, why did you have to go and do this?!

Kill all the boots, and bushings!!!!

The car wouldn't take a key, and that just wont do...

Wile all the bad stuff was happening this test fitting happened

sense I want to keep my oem toe hook, and run and aftermarket toe hook some trimming needed to be done.

I plan on welding up some side walls to the new hole i put into the areo , but this is how it will look sitting on the car.

A buddy of mine had this in the back of his eg6 and he didnt want it, so i took it.

And i made it look like this.....(My buddy is a little mad now)

A few days latter I went to my "local" import shop and picked up a set of spoon front and rear strut bars.

For those who like the proof

After about an hour or so they looked good as new.
