  • Running for longest build thread ever

Originally got this 1992 Mazda 323 hatchback 1.6 last year to lug my fat ass around during the freezing cold and snowy weather of Calgary. Previous owner's winter beater as well so we all know how the underneath would be like. I suppose the only good thing about this little turd is the underpowered engine that has been running strong since 500k kms ago! Previous owner said the clock had over 480k kms when he first got it, put on over 60k kms since he got it plus my driving closing in on 20k kms. I couldn't believe it myself, but then again this was built at the time when they were meant to last, unlike cars these days.

At first I've always thought this car was so ugly coming from a guy that likes small hatchbacks (EG6's from the Philippines started it). I've been contemplating whether I should even touch the car or leave it as is but this past few weeks now its grown on me that I can already imagine how it would look best, provided I get there soon to be able to show y'all the vision while ballin' on insufficient funds as I go.

Few things I've done to it aside from the usual touch ups of rust spots and keeping the stock interiors spotless and looking almost new are 1) windshield replacement – there were two cracks all the way across the whole thing, the tint was probably the only thing holding it together, and it was so pitted and stone chipped that when light hits it the wrong way I'm either blinded or couldn't see anything at all; and 2) the sound system, I just have to have that boom and this is probably the only thing in this car that I've really spent some good coin. Previous owner had installed a decent Alpine head unit already so that was a good starting point for me to add an amp and a sub. I had to replace the 4 speakers around coz he kept using the busted and torn up speakers which were probably as old as the car.

Some DIY (most like everything on this car would be DIY) sub box in the spare tire well... can you say rice'd out!? Don't know how rice got mixed with the resin but eh, blame it on the alcohol.

And to make do with the riced out sub box and seal everything.... hey what do I know!?

It was so dark my camera phone wont focus properly...

Everyone knows rice is very filling, now the Mazzz just squats itself. Sub box got a little too heavy? Either that or it's just the shit suspension.

Got the car with great studded winter tires and I didn't want to ruin it driving during the summer so to Kijiji (Canadian's version of Craigslist I suppose) I went and found a set of 14" snowflakes for cheap.

The silver/black wasn't working for me so I spraybombed it.

Then I wanted to try on some other shoe size and got a set of Rotas for cheap too, again from Kijiji. Not sure which model it is exactly but the measurements were 16x7" 4x100 et40, and came with performance tires with built in steel brush coming out of them (I should've taken a photo of those, a fad perhaps?)

Since I'm always ballin' on insufficient funds, I had to hold out putting these on until I got a hold of used tires for cheap. I found two different pairs that would sort of fit keeping them close to stock total diameter, a pair of 205/45 that I put on the rear with a 1" hubcentric spacer coz it'll rub the struts otherwise, and a pair of 195/45 to the fronts which fit surprisingly without the spacer. Thanks to UrbanX for the super fast tire-to-wheel mounting, just had to pee the afternoon coffee out and there they were ready to go.

And the way the Mazzz sits right now...

Biggest issues I want to deal with are the suspension and rust... and with my baller status, this could be the longest running build thread ever.

Thanks! I doubt it I'll swap for power, still a believer of 'if it aint broke don't fix it' coz as it is right now, I think this engine would still out last the body if I dont do anything to it lol plus I don't really have the need for more power, I hop on my sportbike for that, so driving a car I tend to be more chill, and so...

I also would like to get a hold of GTX bumpers though. Our 323's bumpers here stick out way too much for my liking.

And yes, a visit to our local scrap yard for some spring seats and mounts...

Yes indeed! I admit I'm not completely sold on my current wheels (16x7 et40). I'm liking and more likely go with 15x8s, maybe 15x10s if they will fit, et should between 0 to +20, maybe +30, and then stretch and poke those things.

But I guess first thing's first, I need to work on my shitty suspension. Again, ballin' on insufficient funds, got some Lotek suspension and spring set that's supposedly dropped 1.8", we'll have to see.

Seeing that my sub setup reverse rakes the car already, I might just swap the fronts only.

what makes it the longest build thread ever?

& I can relate to subwoofer ride height, i've got 120 pounds of box and woofers in my trunk and my car was nearly as low in the rear as it is now from the worn out stock suspension sagging under the weight X)

Indeed. I never liked this weather, maybe except for the first time that I've ever experienced it but even then after an hour, I was like when will it stop!?

Anyways, yes and I was still on my summer tires, a little too big for my liking though I think... I really need to work on the suspension and they would have to wait until the weather cooperates. Ball joints need replacement, I guess pretty much all the bushings too. Never really worked on a car so this will be interesting, for me at least.

Some first snow day shots... (read: something to laugh at?)

Sorry English isn't my first language, I should change it to 'slowest'.

Still collecting funds for suspension parts. Ball joints and all bushings need replacement, pretty much the maintenance stuff first, then more low after!

Photochopped stance when I first got the rust bucket.

Thank you! I believe I saw you builds as well. great motivation/inspiration.

I've always like small hatchbacks, like the EG6 and VW mk2/3 but as I'm always ballin' on insufficient funds (got this car for an xbox) so I make do with what I got.

I may need some of your expertise/suggestions down the road, hopefully you wont mind.
