  • A Bug with a story " Project Amy "

Hi, i'm Jelle and this is the story about my 1973 Volkswagen Beetle.

I first saw the car at Cars And Coffee Antwerp (27/1/2013) completly random.
Took a few shots and fell in love with it.

Sure enough few weeks later (26/2/2013) I did a full fotoshoot of it, and could not stop looking at the car.
The day of the shoot the owner told me it was for sale.
I asked the price and onwer told me it was 6k, for me it seemed a good price.
Coming home I told my parents that I wanted that car, they told me if I would save up my money from work I could get it a few months laters, sure enough just 6 weeks later it was on the driveway.
And thats when it went downhill..

I wanted to register the car, not knowing I still had to get the car checked up for registration, and it not being in the state for it I had to put it back orginal.
Not having any parts for it I called the previous owner of the car, but he did not respond, after some days he did and I went to pick up some of the parts he still had that came with the car.
The only thing I could use was the front axle, so that was fitted that evening.
I did not all go as planned and I got pissed and let car sit in the garage for 3 months and not even looking at it and planning to sell it on again.
I went to another cars and Coffee and saw 2 nice Beetles, talked to the owners and they came over to look at my car. Few weeks later the car is pretty much ready for the big check up.
<- Thats how I left the car in the garage for 2/3 months ( I do feel really bad about it )

Here are some pics of the progress :

from here on this is what I did all on my own :
    Undercoating against rust etc

Refitted original side fenders for my indicators

Refitted bumpers and yellow fog light and bolted the hood back on

This is just the beginning of whats going to happen to the car, after the check up its going away for paint and then it will be lowered again.

Should be ready before Feb 2014

I will be constantly updating this thread.

    I excuse my bad grammar

        Updates.

Ok so with winter coming in soon i pushed the car inside and made a big decision that would cost me more time but would have a better effect overal I think.

So we pushed it inside and I started stripping the comeplete car

After pushing it inside I started taking of litlle bits and pieces. Since I have no knowlegde of working on a car what so ever I was a bit scared at first but I knew if I would tag everything and put all the bolts and screws in small bags and tag them I might be able to do it.

Most of it stripped allready but far from done

Started wetsanding with 800grid loooong way to go on that. :/

In between working on cars and searching parts etc I needed a aircooled car to drive! So I picked this up cheap! A 1983 1200 Beetle Mexico. Needs some work but at least it drives!

No new updates but Amy is getting close to ready for paint. The only problem I had is that I wasnt able to work. Still hoping to get the car ready by the end of the year. New interior should be here in 3/4 weeks.

Have been going totally mental on my Beetle for the last few weeks.
My back is doing ok again so I decided to pick it up again.

Pushed her outside, has been over year.

                Took the body off.

                Took the engine off.

                Removed the undercoating.

                Up to bare metal.

                Then primer.

                More sanding.

                Front in primer.

As this is a full restoration I cant have things like this anymore. Seems to be the previous owner just tried to hide the rust and rotten parts. So I removed it, to my suprise nothing bad. In the rear arches we found rotten holes covered up by dutchtape, yes tape...

Removed all the old cabeling. Also took out the heating things for more rear low.

Test fitting some wheels. First set OZ 15" no offset nr's. Second set BBS RF 17x8.5
                Both real and no reps.

More soon. Also, this car will be at SoWo, hope to get it ready before march so I can get her shipped on time.
