  • Ol' 5

Hey Stanceworks. Here's the abridged version of how I acquired my current car.

It all started in senior year of high school when a buddy and I picked up an AW11 MR2 to rebuild its motor for our senior project. This turned into a three year resto-mod/odyssey/personal journey. You know how it is...

Well it was quick and handled like a minecart, but everyone in my life (myself included) ***** riding in it. By then, the Stanceworks hivemind was taking hold and I found myself attracted to old BMWs, so I listed the MR2 on craigslist to fund such a purchase. Then I found a local fella who had a soft car and wanted a hard one. Perfect. I traded him my MR2 for this.

Ah yes, pretty much 90s hip-hop on wheels. An E34 535i, car phone and 6-disc changer included. I remedied an overheating scare by changing the coolant and fixed the porpoising back end with some new strut tops. At that point, I pretty much fell in love. Never before had I been surrounded by such a quirky array of creature comforts, and it drove like a dream. Unfortunately, 19 MPG wasn't sustainable at that point in my life and I really missed the third pedal, so two days ago it was sold. Someday, E34 M5. But until then...

It's time to get weird. Midway through my ownership of the E34, I found a gentleman with an even older bimmer on Craigslist and shot him an email on a whim. He was interested in potentially doing a trade, so I paid him and his car a visit. Although he decided to purchase an Audi, we kept in touch talking about our cars. This friendship turned into him holding the car for me with a down payment as I attempted to sell the E34. It sold quickly, and the very same day I picked up the Ol' 5.

It's a '79 E12 528i with 160k original miles and service records indicating its purchase from Bellevue BMW, a local dealership, 34 years ago. She's rough around the edges, but for what I paid, I have no regrets. It's hard to say which way the wind will blow in a couple of months, but I'd like to hold onto this thing for a while as it oozes character and is a pleasure to drive.

Since it takes a village to raise a child, I'm here to hopefully gather E12 information and parts because there's really not a lot out there. I cannot promise quick progress or anything flashy, but give me time and I can promise you clean.

aha love it, great mentality to building a car.

would love to see/hear a bit more about that MR2, or "Seņor Dos" as me and my circles refer to them as lol
