  • Ole Hoodrat: the story of a beetle

February 2012 I purchased a "barn find" 1960 beetle from a friend in hopes and dreams of having a sweetastic, raunchy ass, slammed on its balls, beetle.

Some of the re-spray paint was flaking and I saw some original one year only color code paint and got delusions of factory paint and patina so I easy offed the entire car and found a bunch of beautiful body work. But I decided to just run with it because I couldn't help but like something about it. So I started building it.
Up front I put a 5" narrowed beam with super clocked adjusters and 2.5" drop spindles. Out back I slapped in 4" drop plates, heavy duty golf cart shocks, and went down one out spline on the rear torsions. New drum brakes all the way around for mad stopping power, new master cylinder and all new hard and soft lines.

Decides I didn't want to spend money on floor pans yet and did what any sensible person would do.

For more offset out back I found some type 181 (VW Thing) drums, which pushes the rear wheels out an extra inch. Just had to turn down the face of the drum and boom HERRA FRUSH.

The difference between beetle and thing drums.

Then I decided I didn't want to ride around on stock wheels cuz that shit is lame, so I had some old school appliance pacer centers sett in some custom barrels built at my specified offset.

    With suspension at full droop.

The first test drive got me about 3 miles and then the fuel line got clogged up with old gas and crud.

Fixed that the day before the southrn fresh spring meet and got to do my first real test drive to the meet.
Found this picture of me scraping engine case through the "burnout box" at the meet.

The next morning I rolled out to import alliance and had a good time seeing some sweet cars.
Had the carb rebuilt and tune after discovering fuel pissing out of the diaphragm.
Got an email from some crazy Canadians and was asked to do a video feature and photoshoot.

Sorry, we couldn’t find that page

Next big event I was trying get to was obviously southern worthersee 2013. On the way the fuel pump decided to unassemble itself. So I had to break out the tools on the side of 400 and get it back to pumpin fuel properly.
Finally made it to sowo and had a fuckin blast. Met a bunch of cool people and drank almost enough.

Made it back home and haven't been able to drive it a whole lot due to a few small issues and work stopping me from doing much of anything.

I'm now in the process of building a new transmission with more acceptable gear ratios for cruising on the interstate and building a 2" tranny lift which will give me the clearance I need under the motor as well as pull out a little camber so my axles can stop committing suicide.
Hope you guys enjoy this turd.

I really liked that thing at SoWo. All the aircooled people around me are boring and weird as shit, and none of them know how to have any fun with their cars.

Hahah, seemed the same way at Cult Classic. This thing is 100% rad, I love the wheels the styling everything honestly, I don't know if there was a way to make this better.

Thanks for all the love guys. I've got quite a bit to do and redo. Sowo is the deadline but hopefully I'll get it done sooner. I already can't wait for next year.
