  • The DD and the shenanigans that follow.

So I bought another car. It's older than my previous and imo much cooler to cruise with around in circles to and from work and during the day. But dont expect to go fast.

Some of you may know of my other car thats on here and I keep wrecking and playing with it, that giant blue accord boat.

It's been through a few stages, coils, bags, back to coils. Theres a build thread link in my sig - though its not a very interesting read.

Anyway, safe to say I'm not 'new' to the scene, but I'm more than happy to call myself a novice

Onto the new car - I was working all holidays during uni break, made a grand off of a weeks work with some epic jobs coming in, not much to most, but to me felt like the richest dude around.

So I was just chillin at home one night, watching terrible TV and eating some maccas when I decided to jump onto eBay and fulfill my Mazda addiction - I am obsessed with oldschool mazda's - namely 808's, rx3's anything wagon shaped or with an 'rx' badge.

In my searches I came across this.

Now for those that don't know what it is - i never even knew they made these things in wagons and I like to think I know a little about mazdas more so than other makes - Its a 1984 Mazda 929 Wagon, 5 speed manual, 2.0L MA 4 banger powerhouse of an engine with a single carb.

I saw that it was just in the next suburb from me, so at 8pm one monday night with nothing to really loose except face time with shitty tv I called him up and asked to come look at it, to which he said I could.

I went up to check it out - it has a few.... things going for it and certainly a couple going against it.

One HUGE thing I was impressed with is the fact it has 0 rust - its all been cut out and resprayed white so that was epic. The interior was relatively tidy and generally ok. Few tears in the seats but the ash only had one crack and the power windows - yes POWER windows - still worked a charm as well as automatic locking for the rear two doors.

Now at this stage it was good, so I asked to look under the bonnet - I shouldnt have. should have just shut up and walked away but nope, had to keep looking.

At a glance engine was ok, however upon closer inspection it had more engine oil on the outside of the block and gearbox than it did on the inside. not even kidding - at least its not going to rust.

So apart from that epic leak of oil, a clutch master leak and a dead battery, I got it turned over and started straight up after it was sitting for a few weeks.

So I haggled him a price, got to keep most of the money I had got the previous week even after buying the car so at that price I couldn't refuse - I drove home with a months rego also! Sweet.

So the day after I got it I was driving home from work - bam.

already got fined -.- To low, no H pattern (its got fully hekaz Nismo shift knob), oil leak - LOL more like gush and HID's.

    Good fun.

So I kept driving it for a bit, was being a mad drift king on day and tore a tyre off the bead by ripping sidewalls apart. 40kW fury shouldnt be slid in the dry.

    So after I had dealt with that also, I have been driving it for a while until a few days ago I decided that it needed work. So heres the list for it;

So I got to work. (don't worry, theres more pictures now!)

My friend is certainly no photographer - lucky hes a mechanic instead his photos are the worst.

So it came out easy enough, not to many hassles, but then these engines have the worlds shortest gearbox bolts making it difficult to get onto the stand, so gave it a bit of a talking to with the grinder, then there were no issues.

Gotta have your swagswag hightop shoes on while being a mechanic.

And I only got a little further last night, but I thought that was enough to be a starting point. I removed the rocker cover to a clean as head - thank god! was worried it was going to be terrible under there

And a few photos of what it looks like at normal driving height etc with engine in before I ruined it all.

And no, DD isnt Daily driver, a running joke in my mates (because they are such comedians...) it its the Damned Daily seeing as I have got more in fines from le police in this in just two weeks than I have in the accord since I have owned it (almost 9 months) even though its infinitley more defectable and quicker.

Agreed completely! They do look quite awesome.

Anyway, got a bit more done. I'm not sure who did the work on this engine prior to me, but its atrocious, the amount of silicone used for absolutely no reason - that I can tell so far - is quite astounding.

Here is what I mean, its oily and diry but you can make out just how much was used at the bottom of the timing case.

So yep, thats interesting. gotta fix that.

Got the sump cleaned and painted as well as the rocker cover, zero shits given, just covered both in black with the least prep possible.

      and my mad workspace.

With FINALLY the engine in pieces, time to get gasket kits and shit done to get it back together (Y) Oh and new carby. Everyone loves new carbs.

Great car, this could turn out really amazing!
My 1978 Porsche 924 build thread is quite boring.

Haha it's good fun to cruise around in! There are no crazy plans really, it's low enough, maybe a new set of oldschool jap wheels like stars sharks or mk2's or something!

There are basically no plans for this, just fix, rego and drive and keep it going!

            Right.

            Spend ANOTHER day cleaning this lump of metal. So boring, but the results are pretty good. It needs new gaskets throughout, probably;

            Sump
            Rear Main
            Timing cover
            Thermostat housing
            Rocker Cover

            Also needs;

New Dizzy O ring or something.
            New Plugs
            New Oil Drain Plug
            New Leads
            New Clutch + Machine Flywheel

Then I need to sort out the intake, I'm thinking for practicality, single down draft webber, but for awesome e-cred I need twin side drafts.

But I will sort that out during the week along with the gaskets and everything, the goal is the engine to be ready by end of this coming week to go back into the car.

Right! Work has been done, its getting close to being back on the road. Hopefully, maybe.

I got the engine bay cleaned, I thought I was going to need to respray it, but after a good pressure wash and steel wool scrub it came up pretty awesome!

And then I got onto one thing that was REALLY bugging me. The dizzy.

The original had oil in the actual dizzy as well as a busted O - Ring so not only was it leaking back through the hole it goes into it was ruined internally. Gay.

So I hit up a few people, got in touch with some guy I just found on facebook and he said he had what I needed and that I could come grab it.

So I showed up on his doorstep with $50 for parts, walked out with a brand new upgraded FE Dizzy, along with another standard MA Dizzy, a whole webber dual barrel carb + adapter plate to suit my engine and intake, along with a whole new reco head, leads, thermostat, thermostat housing (those should fix the overheating issue) and got to even keep my $50. Was a champion kind of guy, just gave me all that gear for nothing seeing as he was not interested in piston mazda engines so I happily took everything.

So i hit up repco, got a couple more bits and got to fitting new plugs and leads and the dizzy!

But I had a problem, the dizzy bolt point was way to big, had to give it a mad shave down with a grinder.

And the awesome new carb, looks the goods, seems clean, I will throw it on, tune it, see what happens!

Ok bit of a little update, got my clutch! Wooo.

Its so clean and beautiful, like the engine and bay, I don't want to drive it, just stare at the parts....

Pressure plate, all made up specially for this application seeing as they didnt have what I want on the shelves! 30% stronger clamping than stock, essentially a HD replacement.

the material part is exact same as what I did have, looks good, the old one was only at about 30% left, so it needed a replacing.

New throwout and spigot bearings also, machined the flywheel while I was there.

All up, was a little more costly than I had hoped being around the $350 mark for everything, but I know now that nothing will break. The engine will explode before it ruins another clutch

now to put it all back together....

Unsure If anyone is reading this, not that I thought it's 'stance' worthy, just its different so I thought some might like pictures

Anyway, onto todays update. Got some more stuff done, but nothing like starting the day by breaking some important, much needed stuff.

Shit yeahhhh, love breaking thermostat housings. So I went and resued the other I tossed aside the week before and threw it on, now I have to get a new radiator hose as it points forwards, not out. oh well, at least it fits, seals and will work.

Then I spent a good portion of my day fighting this new carb, getting it on.

First I had to start by enlarging the holes for the nuts to bolt one end of the adapter plate down to hte manifold, was a giant pain, had to use a gradual expanding drill bit, along with grinding off the stud at the top of it once it was bolted down.

And at this point I decided this was not the right adapter plate for this manifold, but hey, it worked in the end.

this is the reason why I wanted the webber, theres only ONE single vac line, not 50000.

Got to block all these, wooo

And thennnnnn how it sits today.

Dont mind the gasket goo nonsense, some wanker supposedly had a 'brand new never opened' gasket kit, sold it to me, turns out was missing sump and timing cover. so had to get a bit crazy with gasket goo, but its sealed and will work, but messy, but eh. better than it was when I pulled it out!

If it leaks, im going to have a fit, rip it out then burn this car.

but nah, if it leaks I am probably doing something very very wrong, also I left so much gasket goop around the edge of each one INCASE it does leak so I can see where its coming from.

Painted block black, cant see new leaks. Logic of the gods.

No, your not missing anything, no H pattern, like 110$ fine it was.

Was immense amounts of garbage. :'(
