  • Don't call it a come back...

    Evening/Morning.

As a few have pestered. And Im sat in my shop on a rainy winters day with not much else to do..... I figured i'd get a thread started for the latest addition.

Some may know or have seen my old hcr32 Nissan Skyline. Pretty much the most disasterous project car in my 7 year history (yup worse than the cabby), with 2 engines blown up, huge amounts wasted on bad maps, being crap at drifting, and never being happy with the car, all added upto ****** the thing and just parking it at work for sale for 3 months until some poor unsuspecting soul came and offered some cash to take the cursed piece of metal away...

    The heap in question...

Anyway, fortunately and selfishly, that car sold a couple of weeks back (2 days later, blew up its 3rd RB20DET) but at least i had a wad of cash. Much of which was spent paying back friends that had helped me with the skyline, but left me enough to start another project, something I've been wanting to go back to pretty much as soon as i purchased the Nissan....

    Another e36...

I have missed my old 323 from the minute I swapped it. So its just been a matter of time....

I deliberated hard over a mk2 golf and another BMW coupe.

I actually pulled off the proper car buying technique this time round, and fully inspected every car we viewed and thought long and hard which was going to be best for us.

I wanted a big bumper 2 door mk2 gti, and everything here in NZ is astranomically priced for anything remotely clean... So i decided on the non mtec e36 route...

In the end we decided on this super clean, 140000km, 1994 pre facelift, auto, non mtec, 325i. Yup its an auto. And actually that was methodical for me. I've learnt over the last few years, that, i genuinely have no self restraint in a manual RWD. If i can go sideways... I probably will... So this auto basically stops me doing so... (I say basically, because sport mode is suprisingly perky)

So here she is, in all her Grey non mtec glory.

    So there we have it...

Oh apart from this box turned up at my house...

    Containing these puppies...

HSD dualtechs. All the way from Driftworks. Incredibly, they turned up in 3 days! That the UK to New Zealand in 3 friggin days!! Amazing service!!

So that meant, due to us living bang in the centre of the city, and only having 1 parking space... My daily had to say goodbye to make some space... After trying to get the poor boxer engine to turn over for 2 hours to absolutely no avail. I scrapped it... Because im lazy.

So bye bye Grand Wagon. You have served us... Ok... But now for some nice 'methodical' German engineering...

The car is absolutely staying non mtec. Im bored of seeing the same angular lines over and over so hopefully i can make this work... Also, thankfully, Kiwis dont seem to value their Vaders as much as us Brits do, so with any luck i can pick up a set of black leathers in the next month or so...

I dropped off some 3pc wheels, to my new local... Precisonwheels. To have a barrel crack welded and the tyres blasted on..

Anyways, sunday was coilover fitting day... So me and the lady grabbed some brekky and headed over to a friends out of town to get some work done with the use of his tools (the problem with living in a busy city centre is storage!!) So we rolled up and cracked on. So much so, i completely forgot to take any pics and Fiona managed to grab one...

    One side done...

No sheared or seized bolts/nuts which i was pleasantly surprised with... I guess thats the benefit of living in a salt free country...

And the end of the day with HSD dualtechs on.. (Still with about 5cm of threads to go).. And all 4 guards rolled super flat using my own tried and tested method of grinder/heatgun/large copper hammer! I always get smooth and super flat results, so no need for a roller for me.

We made it home safe and sound after an hours drive of pretty severe splash guard rubbing....

So the next day, i was destined for Precision wheels.. Basically the mecca for low and fitted cars in Auckland... These guys are seriously passionate about what they do, but more on that in a min..

So this is as i rolled up to Precision... After being pulled over en route... Infact, the police officer thought the car was soooo ridiculous that i ended with an escort to Precision so she could check i was actually sorting my horrific rubbing issues! Luckily, she was from Exeter in Devon too (I mean what are the flipping chances of that) and let me off with a verbal warning for no Cert (a road legal requirement for most modifications in NZ)..

    PHEW...

Anyway, back to the matter at hand.. Time for wheels!

This time round I opted for some rather expensive but super nice and newly released Toyo DRB rubber. In a tried and tested 205/40 and 215/40 fitment front and rear..

    They stretch

So, back to how awesome Precision wheels really are..

Alex, Zac and Max REALLY hooked me up and put in a good 5 hours work to make sure i was perfectly happy with the set up... Mia the beautiful husky helped too... Well she stood around and looked beautiful anyways!

So with camber, caster, toe and ride height/preload fully dialed in, and by dialed i mean everything to 0.1degrees discrepancy. ^_^ Stoked! We moved the fuel filter up into the bay at the same time, as i played that game with my old one, and lost dramatically... Half a tank of fuel on the floor sucks! So im glad to get it sussed straight away!

So heres the sort of finished fitment product.. Obviously a huge number of more plans for the car including interior and exterior changes.. But my main thing is wheel fitment, its not everyones bag, but i love flush wheels and making sparks..

Standard mirror fitment pic... arches just slapping the wheel lips over bigger bumps...

So there you have it. A collection of badly taken iPhone pics, badly uploaded to PB.. That badly raped the quality even further.

So a shoot with someone that owns a DSLR is definitely in order!!

    C&C welcomed as always!

Thanks for the comments so far guys!

These are infact my exact old wheels from when i was living in the UK, and i bought them back from a friend and had them shipped to New Zealand, so I'm pretty sure they're the only set in NZ, if not Australasia, which is kind of cool to know.
So specs are exactly the same as the last car, with 8.5 et13 and 10 et14, but this time I'm sticking to a perfectly even camber set up as the aesthetic pleases me so much more than my previous 3.5 and 7.5 degrees on the Blue car.

Also, this time round, I really want to ensure I only use quality parts, unlike some mistakes I made on the previous build.
