It was hard to tell what the culprit really was in the end, and it seems like more of a mix of everything. A setting a little off here, a worn part there. So he did new plugs, plug wires (I had a set laying around and he used those), points, condenser, rotor, cap, carb jets, alternator belt, battery terminal connector. The most important part of all is he removed the carbs, cleaned them, set them up and then tuned them. I was very happy that the car could run with my carbs because I went through the trouble and cost of polishing them and it also meant I wouldnt be on the hunt for a new set. Drove the car home and then later to a local meet (about an hour round trip from my house) and it drove perfectly. Very happy I decided to let go of trying to fix it myself and have someone else look at it. However, it did pick up a good sized gouge in the driver front wheel as a result of the mechanic hitting a lift moving the car, but im sure that will get sorted out.
now that is a story with a happy ending!!
did you just drop it off while he worked on it or did you actually get to help and learn some things in the process?

Didnt really get to help or learn much from it to be honest. He relayed to me some of what he did to get it working again, but it wasnt a situation where I could hang out at the shop and pick his brain. Having done all the mechanical work on the car myself until now, it was nice to find a shop that can work on it when I cant find a way past a problem. In the past I would always figure it out, but for some reason I was seriously stumped. It actually was quite liberating to not be thinking about the problem on the car from the moment I woke up until I went to sleep for once haha

Sounds like he wont be working on in it the future. Basically said he lost money on the deal and next time it could be a scratched fender or something. Oh well, back to where I was before, but yeah its running now and shouldnt need anything soon.

                    • Out of curiosity, since the Su carbs have been giving you trouble. Why not go with a more improved set of carbs like the Weber 32/36 or the much better dual Mikuni hsr carbs?
I have the Weber on my 122,been a pretty solid carb, never any issues.May eventually upgrade to the HSR carbs when I feel like dishing out 1k.

From what I've heard/read the weber is not an upgrade but more of a comparable replacement which is apparently as finicky, if not more that SU's. I'm sure the mikuni carbs would be nice, but again, there would have to be substantial gains in either performance, reliability, or consumption for me to head in that direction. In the end, the SU's I have on the car probably just needed new jets, floats and to be set up properly after all the other engine adjustments had been performed. I'm planning on not needing to mess with them for a while.
