  • Building a daily 944

This is my first big build and i've already been doing it for a while so here is what has happened so far. I am in college so its been a budget build with some help from my parents.
-Replaced timing belts, balance belts, new hardware
-Balance shaft case broke a bolt and had that milled out (lots of guys in my car get together are very helpful)
-Bead blasted and took off most of the top end
    - other stuff like master and slave cylinder replaced, some cosmetics

Got to give a huge shout out to the guys I see every Wednesday who are gurus to me. (one owned a Euro shop and worked on several 944 so goldmine there)

I decided to do this thread because we just pulled an engine from a 944 that was in a junkyard and I have just started a full tear down and rebuild on it. Hope you enjoy.

Here is the car, needs to be cleaned once it is licensed. It runs and is fine to drive just need to get it all licensed and titled.

This is one of my other projects, I have a bit of welding experience but nothing huge but since this is a project I said screw it I'm going to cut this rust out and weld a new piece on.

Here is the work I did in the amount of time I had, just removing some accessory parts. Apologizes for the mess, I was eager to get it started, I'm setting up a better work space with what I have to work with.

Any and all suggestions would be awesome, I am not sure what I want her to be yet, maybe a car I can drive and then take to the track for a day of play. Who knows may sell her and the extra engine and get a 951 (944 turbo). I'm leaving all doors open.

I love 944s. I would keep most of the body OEM and lower it considerably but not slammed so you could still toss it around a track without issue. Maybe a separate set of wheels for the track and for the road.

I plan on keeping it OEM, maybe convert to Euro OEM. If I decide to keep her for a long time I will get some coilovers/ a good set up from Pelican Parts that will lower it but keep her able to drive anywhere and handle better. The extra set of wheels will be a pain since this is a 1987 so it has ABS and cannot fit Fuchs or early model wheels. I woud love some 17 inch BBS wheels but those are stupid expensive.

The idea of a street/track 944 came from one of the Wednesday group, he has a race-only 944. I'll post pics when I can. His son races 911s so I really like those as well.

Making the 944 engine faster is just too expensive, the engineers maxed it out(don't wanna blow the engine either), so thats why the 951 turbo option is something I am looknig at in the future. The 944 focused on handling aspects not 1/4 miles and I am content with that........for now. Also the resale of the 951 is better than an "amateur" turbo add on. Never know when a 911 might pop up. Who knows

Suspension tuning and lightness are cheaper than another engine or a turbo so I'd start with that. Pulling things off your car is free

Yup, too bad the Porsche wheel 5x130 is not really mass produced and really expensive lol

Here is another quick update from yesterday. Just took most of the rollers, sprockets, and belts off.
Got the cover off as well

And here is the temporary parts table (filling up quick)
