  • 1985 Porsche 944

Basically my old man got me this ride last year. The previous owner was a lady who bought it new back in '84. So long story short my dad basically found a diamond in the rough, it was a pure bard find. It's a 5 speed manual, black, the previous owner said all it needed was a starter and it was good to go. But I got excited and shattered a spark plug, a piece of ceramic broke off and lodged into the little opening when you remove the plug. Anyways it fell in and now I have to remove the head and take the broken piece out. I want it to be running by the end of August, strong enough to be a daily. There are only about 15,000 original miles on the car. Oh yeah, it's been sitting for 7 years before I got it in my possession. This was the first picture I've ever seen of it... Looks like a huge mess. But it was just the lighting.

The Porsche got to my house on March 6, my birthday... about three months after Christmas. These shots are from about a month after it was delivered. The condition looks a lot better than the original picture.

After a few weeks of it sitting in my driveway I wanted to see if I could do some minor work to make it look better (in my opinion). I took the the '944' badge on the rear. After that i had an ordeal, i didn't like the 'Porsche' sticker on the back. I attempted to take that off, it was a mistake i learned the hard way. If you don't have the right tools don't do it. I ended up melting some of the paint on the back along with the sticker. Oops... Anyways, I took apart some of the dashboard, instead of my original plan of installing the later generation dash (it would take way too much time) I took off that hideous fake aluminum by sanding it very carefully. The black is afterwards, and I took the rear lower valance off.

In order to achieve my goal of August, I finished the dash and took the bumper off, a few months ago, to sand it down to the bare aluminum for prep to respray the car. But this is what the bumper and dash looks like now.

              The head... baby steps

I wanted to get the head job done relatively soon so that I can work out any other problems I might encounter. Hoping that everything goes well, I expect this part to take a few days. I started by removing the air box and intake manifold along with the throttle body. The fuel rail and injectors also came out. But I just found out that a small little hose that snapped off was connected to the brake booster... Another thing I might have to replace. Awesome. But for now I started small.
              Before

              Fuel rail removed

Air box and intake manifold removed (if anyone plans on doing this, it's not hard so don't be discouraged... I've been told it doesn't get interesting until the valve cover comes off.)

I put rags in the holes right after.
