  • KP60 Starlet - Project Bumblebee

    Hi guys.

I'm Shaun, i'm twenty years old and I'm from New Zealand.

I have Just purchased a 1984 manual Toyota Starlet that will be my new daily driver/ project. The car is New Zealand new with only 123,000km on it. The first owner was an old woman who owned it for 20 years then passed it on to her grandson who sold it to the girl I purchased it from. There's virtually no rust and it is 99% original.

The plan is to tidy her up (not that it needs much tidying ) and sort out the stance. It has the original 2k engine so that will need to go eventually but I'm not sure what will replace it yet.

This is going to be a slow-ish build as its my daily, and between work and racing I won't have a lot of time.

That interior is so basic and awesome.

I really want to know more about the race cars!

          Update

Cheers for the comments! Got a little bit sorted on the car this weekend, my mate Ash and I went to Pick-A-Part and managed to get a factory stereo, front panel and a bunch of other bits and bobs. (Sorry for the crappy iPhone pics)

We cleaned up the 80's looking speaker covers then fitted them with brand new Pioneer speakers.

We then sorted the original parcel tray that had been painted by a 14 year old at some point.

Ash spray glued the panel and wrapped it in black canvas and fitted the new-old speakers.

We still need to wrap the side panels it sits in as they're very worn and replace the carpet with black stuff.

We then tackled the front panel (not sure what its called) it's hard to tell in this picture but the original was munted and painted with a brush.

We took the grinder to the rusty bits, etch primed and painted it.

The colors a little off but it will do until I get a full respray and is a huge improvement over the original.

Our next job was to rust proof the front end.

We cleaned every thing with a wire brush, grinded off any rust then cleaned it with multi purpose cleaner then degreaser.

          We primed the exposed metal.

We found a few small rust holes, cut out the rust and Ash patched them with new steel.

Then we started to paint on the rubber based rust proofer. Still going on this part but hopefully we can have it back together soon.

Sweet, man. I love what the guys in Puerto Rico do to these! That's where all the 7-8 second Starlets seem to come from anyways.
