  • Slow but steady SVO Mustang build

Been a lurker for awhile but finally picked up a car I've been wanting for awhile and getting ready to do some light mods and get this car sitting low. This car is going to be my daily and I've got two other Stangs (67 restomod and 95 drift/track/hooligan car) that seem to want all my money so this one will be done as money allows. The car is a 86 SVO, for those of you who don't know, it's a turbo 2.3L Mustang. Came factory with all kinds of neat upgrades over your regular Mustang, adjustable Konis, sportier seats, different front end, and a some other stuff. They're not too common, around 10k made and I've never seen one drastically lowered so it ought to turn some heads from Mustang guys and stance guys alike. Plans are pretty basic, trying to get everything running right and 100% (just need a couple little pieces and that can be checked off the list) and then I'm going to throw on a set of Racelands, 18x10 XXRs, an exhaust and better stereo and call it done if I can get the stance I want with the coilovers. If not, I'll have to rethink the suspension setup but they're $470 which is nearly what just a set of adjustable lower control arms cost for the rear so it's worth the experiment. It won't be as low as a lot of you guys as I live out in BFE and need to get in and out of my driveway but it'll be low for a Mustang.

And of course, here's some pics of the beast.

Oh hell yeah! Beautiful car. I'd love to see this unfold into some stance.
The only thing lower than my standards is my truck.

Thanks for the kind words fellas. This car is just an absolute blast to drive. I've got a radiator ordered and trying to find some good quality motor mounts for it. I've got some tidying up and little fixes here and there that need to be done before she goes low, I try to get everything freshened up before I jump into mods with my cars. Found a cheap head/block on craigslist. Real tempted to snag it up and rebuild it and throw in a lopey cam to make me giggle.

Slow progress on the Mustang, I was hoping to order Racelands soon but a bad fuel pump has put that on the backburner. A Walbro 255lph unit has been order and I went ahead and picked up new door handles and a suede headliner that should look nice in the car. Still missing a couple pieces of interior trim that bothers me but getting there. I may end up wrapping a lot of the interior if I keep this car longterm as the aged plastic looks like shit. I'll have pics of the interior once I get started on that.

Looks clean! I used to almost want one of these so I did a bunch of photoshops of fox bodies on the ground. Some of them looked pretty dope. It can be done! Can't wait to see what you come up with.

                      Those are some fun cars.

Looks like you've got a nice clean one to start with too.

Finally got the car running again. Installed the new Walbro 255lph and it still wasn't working. Dug around quite a bit and checked and changed the relay and the ignition switch just to be on the safe side. Turns out my inertia switch had popped up but not enough to get clicked back down... haven't driven the car in close to 3 weeks over a dang button haha. But it's back running again.

I started to pull the headliner and realized that the headliner material is actually glued down in some places directly to the roof. The headliner board itself doesn't even extend into the corners above the windshield. Weird setup, never seen on done like this. I'm considering fiberglassing some corners on it, gluing the material to any metal area that will be exposed and wrapping the headliner like and other one. Also thinking about deleting the sun visors and installing a newer dome light. Still haven't come up with a good plan for much else besides that on the interior. Getting the car low and new wheels has went to the back of the list again, I'm turning a dirtbike of mine into a supermoto and that's proving to cost more than I anticipated. I'm also trying to convince a friend of mine to let me test fit some Varrstoen's he's about to sell to see how the car looks on 19's. Pics for sure if it happens.

Any updates on this? I'm considering the racelands too, since I'm rockin a 4 cyl right now (hey who doesnt like 30 mpg), and I'd like to keep it simpler than a piecemeal upr/whoever else setup. I'd love to know if you got them and what you think of them.

2.3l mustang. yes, it's painfully slow.
