  • E34-my first and fourth car

Ok so long story short for those that dont want to read my long rambles...this was my first car back in 2009, did a ton of things to it, crashed it in late 2010, drove it for a year, replaced it with a 1989 525 5spd, and my mom bought this car from me for my sister, head gasket was on its way out, we pulled the head, motor basically done (cylinders 1,3 and 6 had deep scoring on the walls) mom said f that its not worth the money and went and got sis a new car-a 1995 530i, really nice clean car. Plan was to part this one but I had to have it back so I went to the bank and got her $500 and I had the title back in my hands, still in my name too! lol

Ok so now for the long story...back in summer of 2008 mom bought this e34, a 1993 525i auto, Alpine and Black, 160k on the clock. It was a downsize from the e60 she had. We had to move and yada yada yada. Jump to january 2009 my parents couldnt do the shitty car thing anymore and since mom couldnt work they didnt have to have 2 cars (the e34 and a 1988 toyota that replaced the 2006 dodge my stepdad had been driving since june of 2008) so they said ok lets go try for a nicer car, one car payment, we can do that. Went and picked up a 2005 chrysler 300c for a good deal. They got back from the dealer and said "so keith, can you take over the payment on the bmw? that way you have a car?" Well of course at 16 I said fuck yes! and yanked they keys lol. I had myself a car.

For the next year I really didnt do anything with it besides drive the piss out of it, and put a deck in it so i wasnt stuck with a tape player. April of 2010 my automotive teacher said I should enter the High School Challenge in the Portland Roadster show. Car was basically stock other then the H&R springs the PO put in the car, and the stereo I put in it that was nothing special.

Here she sat in her stock glory. I was proud though. Felt pretty cool to show my car. I worked hard to pay for it, even though at this point it was nothing special. This got the ball rolling and I had to start modding it as much as I could. So over the next couple months I hoarded parts and got started, first was a decent set of wheels. Mom had an e39 before the e60 that she put some terrible chrome wheels on. So the stock style 42's were kickin around in the shed so I asked how much she wanted for them since she didnt have a bmw anymore and she said just take em. If anyone knows BMW wheels and the lame clear coat they use, the shit flakes off. Plus they had some curb rash so I sent them to get the lips refinished. The centers were fine so they werent even removed. Got em back and went to the tire shop. Next up was clear corner markers front and rear, euro smily headlights with HID's, and a license plate delete.

Thats how she sat "in her prime" I also did a few other things, picked up some foglights, new door gaskets, a few other small things it needed. I had a lot more planned for it but high school was about over, needed to get into college, so the spending stopped. Got into school fall of 2010, didnt do anything to the car but drive it. Swapped the stock wheels and tires back on for winter.

Well one day driving home on the freeway this happened:

If you look at the left quarter panel you will see the damage. I went to make a lane change, didnt see the dude in my blind spot and took myself out basically in a pit maneuver. Spun around, almost had it saved a few times then lost control again. Ended up facing north on the freeway on the south side with a semi truck coming at me, breaks locked up. Truck driver said if his trailer wasnt empty I woulda been crushed. The person I hit jumped the median, somehow missed oncoming traffic and ended up on the other side of the north bound side. No one was hurt, we all went home just fine other then being a bit shaken up.

Car was totaled, but was still driveable. So thats what I did for the next year. Took it to prom (if you remember me saying I was already outta high school, you are correct, she asked me, she was hot, i was almost 19 her almost 17, not that big a deal right?? LOL)

Put a volvo lip on it just to scrape on shit and laugh

she was just a dirty daily

But then I found this for $500

Had a trashed interior, no headlights or grill, ran kinda shitty, rough paint overall. But I fell in love. It was a black on black 5spd car. I knew I had a clean black interior I could swap in and I knew I could get the m20 to run better. So after looking at it I went back a few days later and snatched it up. Did a shit ton of parts swapping on it, struts/springs, interior, cleaned it up a ton, bunch of new trim pieces and what not, and some e38 basket weaves. This is how she sat after all that:

But then a short month later this happened:

M20s are notorious for rocker arm failure, and I wasnt secluded from said destruction. Brother in law drove it back from the coast so he could get to work the next day and we hadnt planned on leaving for another 2 days. He called me and told me he lost power and it was ticking pretty badly so the rest of my trip I was a mess. Didnt know what to expect when I got home. Yanked the valve cover to see the piece of rocker arm chillin there so off came the head to go to the head shop to get checked and resurfaced, full valve grind, and a new rocker arm. Got it all back together just to have 3 more rocker arms fail on me. Long story short after having the car down for 2 months, and the head off 4 times I was fed up. And tired of tossing money at a motor that wasnt worth it anyways. So thats when this happened

Picked up an e39 for a dependable daily, build thread can be seen here http://www.stanceworks.com/forums/sh...450#post989450, shes on the back burner now and you will see soon why.

Now lemme show you the state of my "new" e34. After the black e34 was doomed, I put the nicer interior back in this car for my sister, the black car sat for a bit, not driven, not moved, for 4 months. My buddy Luke came and got it after we worked a trade deal for some custom stereo work in the e39. Hasnt happened yet but we're getting there.

Motor is now out though, awaiting its new heart. Another M50 from my buddies e30 24v car thats now getting an S50. Picked it up cheap, know its a good motor, also sourcing 5spd parts. Cant decide if I should put it in the body shop, or embrace the damage and go for the euro rad rod theme sorta. More updates to come as parts come in and the new m50 gets pulled. Thanks to anyone that took time to read this long ass post haha. Ive had a lot of fun with this e34 and Im glad it wont be going to the scrap yard anytime soon!

Its been pushed out some already. Ive decided once I get the thing driving again, tackle all new suspension, Ill look into fixing it. It will obviously need an entire new panel, some time straightening the rear door jam, and a full respray. Theres small dings all over this thing.

Updates will be soon. Just waiting on money, parts, and the motor to be pulled! Hope to have something to post by next weekend.
