  • Finally got a VW! Mk2 Jetta

    WARNING : This first part is long winded. Those of you who don't like reading large amounts of text can skip to the pictures.

    :EDIT: I've been real busy the last few days so i quick edited all the text into what can barely be called paragraphs as some of you requested. Hope this is better!!!

    Basically since the day i got into modifying cars i've been a Subaru maniac through and through. However, over the past year i met a whole new group of friends who are all into the VW/Euro scene and its been a HUGE eye opener. I was still a little skeptical until i attended H20i this past year and that experience flipped everything i knew upside down. :laugh: Since then i've been spiraling rapidly into an infatuation with any and all kinds of European cars (even though i'm still a ridiculous Subaru fanatic).

    Since H20i i've been looking to get into a VW, and this past tuesday the planets aligned and something awesome happened. A little backstory, my father is a used car dealer in Lancaster County so ever since i had the mental capacity to do so i have been buying and flipping cars through him, he allows me to come to the auctions with him twice a week to find some inventory. That being said, this happened - this previous Monday night i went on Garden Spot auctions website to see what was going to be at the sale the following day, just wanted to see if there was anything i would have any interest in. And there really wasn't. There was an older impreza and two mk3 jettas. All of them were automatics so basically i was screwed. But i went the next morning anyway hoping something would be added right before the sale.

    I got there, and walked all of 20 feet down the first row of cars when BOOM i see a white mk2 front end slightly sticking out in the middle. I practically sprinted over to it and when i saw it my eyes bugged out of my head. A white 1992 Jetta GL sedan. It was nearly FLAWLESS! and it is NOT common to find such nice cars at this tiny little place.

    Paint still in good shape : CHECK. Body panels straight with maybe like one little dent in the door : CHECK. No rust on the outside or undercarriage of the car : CHECK. Interior in near new condition with no rips or tears or stains : CHECK. Now the only thing i really had to worry about was the strut towers. Popped the hood, and NOTHING. Not even a spec of rust. My jaw was pretty much on the floor at this point. And the car had (prepare yourself) 100,000 miles pretty much on the dot Sat in it and checked all the functions on the inside (not like theres very many electronic features anyway ) and it all checked out. Started it up and it fired without hesitation and without any weird noises. I was already in love. I jotted down the run number and lane number, wandered around for a little until i was satisfied that i had seen everything that was gonna go through that day, then went straight over to the lane and sat. And waited.

    When it came through the lane i was pretty much determined to take the car home no matter what the price was. The representative for the dealership who was sending the Jetta and at least 30 other cars through the auction that day was about 20 minutes late, which was perfect for me because when a lane is held up everyone leaves and goes to the other lanes so that they don't miss anything else that goes through. This was perfect because the Jetta was second in line and practically nobody was in the lane when the rep finally got there and the lane started moving again. When i know i wanna take a car home, i stand right in front of the auctioneer's stand with my back facing the auctioneer. There was only one other guy bidding against me on the car and I just stood in my spot and stared directly at him the whole time throwing my hand up every time the ball was back in my court. He got the idea that i wasn't letting up and backed out. She was mine.

    I was also twice as happy because i didn't even have to spend a lot of money like i was expecting to. I ended up taking it home for $2000 out the door after the auction fee and whatnot. After signing for it i immediately went out to it and took it for a spin, checking everything else out that i didn't beforehand. It felt like it was new! The alignment was perfect, the brakes felt wonderful and are actually damn powerful (which i wasn't expecting but has already come in handy once due to idiots :facepalm: ) and like before it purred like a kitten. We finished out the day and i went to our garage immediately to wash it polish it a little and wax it. Took me a few ours to sort the entire car out. This was the end result and my only pictures of the car so far taken with my GoPro3;

    First things first i want to do a timing belt water pump and valve cover gasket before i do anything else, and there are a few things i'd like to clean up on the outside just for now, like the passenger side flare is missing a piece where it meets the bumper, the trim is faded and needs to be black again one way or another, its missing one of the pinch rail covers on the drivers side and of course the tape deck is locked and i need to get the security code .

    Also adding fogs smoked tails and E Codes more paint restoration blah blah blah thats all in the future. All i know is i have a bone stock (i think, although i've been told the car has a euro bumper, no idea if thats the case) blank canvas to work with and i'm excited to tear into it. Lemme know what you guys think!
