  • 1993 Astro Van Dropped Family Hauler

First thread, saw what I liked being built on this website, so I thought I would toss up a few projects and introduce myself. Make a long story short, built 46 classic Mini's last year (All original, or fully custom, b18c1 swap, suzuki swap, etc). Wife is from Germany, we had a baby 2 months back and I started building a family hauler up again. Some of the other projects are the 61 Morris Minor I'm building for my pops, on bags, full frame, 95 camaro v6 engine to replace the 4 cylinder that made 34hp. Should be good for low 12's. I'll start a build page on that after lunch. Wife's car I just finished restoring last fall, 1980's German Polizei Wagon from East Germany. My toy car I'm just starting to build a 76 Mini Clubman Estate. Anyway, here's where I am at, sorry don't have a whole lot of build photos, but I will try and take some in the future for phase 2.

After 3 weeks of work, she's sitting pretty.

Front can get a hair lower, but it's about maxed out with this tire size. I commute with it 3 hours a day, so had to put a little bit taller tire on it, 45 series...

Then I wanted to focus on the interior. Guy had previous put 4 captain chairs in it, no seatbelts. So I tracked down a set of 2004 Astro leather seats, getting really hard to come by these days.

I had to cut off the legs of the bench seat, and fabricate a new frame to be able to sit it on top of the wheel tub. It now bolts in and out if I need to take it out.

Rear 12 gallon tank, and dual battery setup.

    Seats all installed.

New Billet Specialties 14" Steering Wheel

Custom hidden hitch to fit behind the roll pan and be able to tow the Mini's around with.

Custom 1/2 ton bumper, narrowed, smoothed and recessed a plate holder into it. Should look the biz when it's done.

Hitch installed, tucks nicely up in there.

    Rear setup

6" C Notch with full tub

Here you can see the shaved back, no handles, rear door pops open with a switch. License plate flips up to get to hitch.

All finished off with the clubby in the foreground. That'sit for now. Going to be redoing all the doors, stereo, custom dash up next. New bags are on there way. Should hopefully be wrapped up in the next month or two. Need to fix 4 bullet holes on passenger side!

Just read your Minor Morris thread. Why can't I have cool friends like you that can make stuff like this happen? This is great. The body style I don't like... but I like this one!

This is not my full time job, started as a hobby years ago, then when I finally moved out here I got a 3 car deep garage and went crazy with the tool shopping and a lift and started my own side business (I work 80 hours a week in virginia, then fridays/saturdays at my house on cars/bikes). I still got a lot more stuff I am going to do to the van, stopping by a upholstery shop on the way home to spit ball some ideas. Would like to do black vinyl with silver french seems on the dash and doors. Anyway, since I don't have any progress more on the van for a bit, I will post up a few Minis I built for myself and customers...

First Mini I ever built. Bored out to a 1293... 92hp.

2nd one I built, 73 Estate, sold it to my buddy who still has it.

Suzuki 3 cylinder NA, but plans were to turbo it with 13lbs of boost.

                  Custom front subframe from scratch

Then my first Acura Integra swap, 210hp roughly when she was all said and done, weighing in at 1200lbs.

                  Deseaming the entire car.

                  Bodywork almost done

                  All done!

                  1 piece flip front.

                  RHD of course!

A little bit of an update, got the new slam bags last night, re-6 front and re-8's rear. I am hoping it will be a good balance. 8's look monstrous compared to the 6's. I also took a crappy picture of the new Billet Specialties Steering wheel, shifter, tilt, etc. The dash I am fabricating right now out of fiberglass. It will house the double din out of my truck and molded in triple gauge pod. Hopefully next week I will get the bags and half the dash done. Then there is a bunch of small details like lighted sunvisors from a 04 Astro, Overhead console, Autodimming rear view mirror with Temp and compass built in. Thinking about adding a rear view camera as well... Anyway, here are a few pics:

DUDE THIS IS SO BOSS. People usually make these all flashy and yuck. But yours is simple and perfect. And a mini with a b-series? WIN.

Thanks, yea I like clean and custom. I have to undo a lot of stuff the previous owner did, like the TV in the dash, felt on the dash and doors. 12 speakers in the doors. So I started to fabricate the dash, thinking about putting 96+ door panels in it, just would have to fabricate a few things to make that work. I want to go down to 4 components speakers which I just got, and a single 10" hidden sub. I built one behind the side rear panel in my last one. This time I am thinking about doing a false floor in the back where the tank is. Put a sub/amp, and lift up panel to put tools in, etc.

Can't wait to get it done, went to a upholstery shop 2 days ago to get a quote on doing the dash and door panels in black vinyl with silver french seams... $500 a door....each, and $2200 for the f-ing dash! See ya later, guess I will have to fab it up.
