  • BMW e28 1987 528e

Hey guys, I know you have all seen this countless times, but im new, and I just bought my e28 this sunday past. Ive been looking for an e30 or e28 for about a year now, and it just so Happens i got the car of my dreams.

Because I live in the country and my avarage trip is around 70-100k, I knew I needed something good on gas. i was originally thinking i might as well just buy a mk2 tdi and get 900km to a tank, but I didn't like the fact that my friends integra could pull on my dads 06 jetta tdi with a stage II chip from Malone tuning. I realized that I need a 6cyl with potential to be boosted, or at least a chassis that can handle a good motor swap selection.

The best motor for this application is the m20 b27. Great on gas..(what I need now) and underestimated because it has the potential to be stroker m20b25.

I almost bought an auto 1987 325e that hadnt been started for 2 years.. :| Luckily that didnt pan out due to a pricey phone bill :?

I keep on looking looking and looking and looking and then BAM! I find THE car.

So its in the driveway now, hopefully I'll be able to replace the clutch master cylinder tommorow. supposed to be warm here in toronto. But heres some night pictures of it that I took over the past few days.

It sucks but I havent actually been able to see the car in the day yet  I leave the house when its still dark and get back when its dark again.Day pictures coming tommorow

SO yesterday got very little done.

    Found these in the trunk

The box was soggy for some reason so rust had formed around the nut section of the plugs, but some quick wire brushing took care of that, later on realized these are to big for the m20, and therefore why they were in the trunk and not in the motor.

The fine gent who sold it to me told me that its running a little bit rich for some reason, i never really asked why though, now I realize why.

Seems like the idle control valve is stuck in a position and to get around the problem, he just used this Vise-Grip to permanently restrict the flow of air coming from the icv.

Not what sure what kind of hard cancerous disease this is. looks like some sort of glue that has since had rust develop underneath it?

Unfortunately as these hoses are potentially 25 yrs old they have since cracked and deteriorated.

So I started the car took off the Vise-Grip and the idle jumped up to about 2grand. put the vice back on and the car completely shut off.

being the smarty pants i figured i was, I checked my dads parts to see if he had a similar hose that could replace it. didnt find one, so just just decided to fix it the best i could.

duct tape and zip ties ftw

plugged that hose into the intake, started the car, and the motor could not stay at one rpm, it just kept climbing and dropping climbing and dropping. I now know why he had the vice on the pipe..the control valve is stuck. now I gotta order one of those from http://www.pelicanparts.com/bmw/cata..._pg1.htm#item3

so not to much success with that,

did some hooning around on my dirt streets. Sideways driving >straight driving

    rest of the pics

quick check with the bbs rc090's. not too sure about them yet though, too common i think.

    the two projects

quite interesting what the p.o did with the bumper shock holes. almost looks like a real bumper!

Original paint! clearcoat is peeling though

    Unholy wheel gap.

    appearently common

cracked in more places than I could count

was wondering why the power sunroof wasnt moving, now i know why, maybe it was leaking? bad seals? looking to fix in the near future. I like sunroofs

i do not support what he did with the rear bumper though, I realllly wanna find one of these! probably just gonna do a junkyard run and see what I can get

Also really wanna get rid of those stickers ASAP

a testament to how minty this find is

    gross

    more gross

    NOT LOUD ENOUGH!

    eta power!

Finally an update. Got some more work done today. weather is below -100 and we dont have a garage built yet, so i refuse to work on cutting springs or replacing the clutch master cylinder..

SO I Ripped out the whole centre console all the way back to the passenger seats.

      Cleaned and disinfected

discovered why it was so ricketty (is currently setting with wood glue)

Took a good look at everything once i was done cleaning and said, this still isnt me. And the boot is HORRENDOUS.

Went to fabric land, searched and searched for a black suede but they didnt have any. Turned out to be a good thing. found a fabric I liked even more. Its gonna give a good contrast against the (soon to be) black bits.

Cut out a section of fabric using the old boot as a reference

Sewed it up real quick with my moms surging machine. and BAM

next I wrapped the centre console in the same fabric to match using headliner adhesive. Worked just swell

      loosely fit with no screws.

Just Folding the tops with a diagonal fold, most will be hidden so I'm cool with that.

Just Gotta paint all the beige bits black and I'll be good.

Doing as much as I can indoors while its ridiculously cold outisde.

      More coming soon

              ok So update.

How it looked when I pulled the whole wobbly centre console out.

Painted everything up nice and black

found this speckled paint that I used on the cover for the ashtray

After much pain and toil, everything finally fit in.

I dont think this is the best choice I could have made.. It's just different. We'll see how it goes. gonna try keeping that fabric as an accent maybe? or may end up changing the whole thing again in the future, who knows

more updates to come. Icv repair up next.
