  • Zero options. Okay, maybe ONE. (e28)

I figured I should probably make a build thread since it seems I may fit in here. Or not.

    Let's turn the clock back...
    2007
I get promoted at work, decide that I want to give my e30 some company in the garage.
Find this POS in the Carolina Bargain Trader for $1800. I buy it for $1200.

’87 BMW 535is, the faster I drove it, the better it got. Tried to quit on me on the way home. Some pack of wolves or something had lived in the car, the interior was THRASHED, and it smelled like someone had vomited all kinds of liquor in the car. hummm. Oh. The fire engine red paint was a backyard spray job, complete with overspray, pine needles, and runs. What can I say, I didn’t know ANYTHING about these cars, but was willing to learn.
I drove it around a few weeks, but eventually it didn’t want to run anymore. (right after a tune-up) I figured I was going to do some GOOD to the car, it had the duct tape intake, coolant hose for fuel hose, you name it. Every single shortcut that would save some money was taken. So I parked it and started researching, asking questions over at mye28, and trying to figure the car out. Meanwhile, I start working on some of the OTHER issues. Like suspension, interior, and exterior. Basically everything but the drivetrain.
    2008
I had gotten Eibach Springs and Bilstiens to replace the blown stock stuff, but shortly after installing it, a guy on Mye28 decides that he wants something softer than his coilovers. We traded suspensions. I also found some euro lights and bumpers, so I started working on that.

Here you can see that my car was originally DS metallic, but the PO decided that FIRETRUCK RED was a better choice.

The car was still at relative stock ride height, and I was doing the cookie cutter e28 build. (Style 5s, lowered, Euros)
    Also, she still wasn’t running.
    2009
I had to move. I pushed my car onto a trailer and moved from NC to MD. e28 back in the garage. Wreck my e30, so I have to buy another e28 so that we’re not just running the x3 all the time. ’87 535iA. It was a fun car.
    2010
Too busy/stupid to work on the car
    2011
Finally, my wife and best friend gang up on me and tell me that I should get rid of the e28. That pushes me off the pot and I get going.
Here she is on her maiden voyage, FOUR YEARS after purchase.

There was no interior, no bumpers, it was just a seat and seat belt.
Things moved pretty quick after that, but, as with any “new” car, you have to shake it down and get all the bugs out. The issue that I finally solved was two pronged. The positive cable to the battery was corroded green all the way up to the starter and fusebox. Also, I had some vacuum leaks that I just didn’t know enough about the car to recognize.

I drove the car EVERYWHERE, trying to shake it down.

I took it to Boy Scout camp in early July because the year before, I found that there were some EXCELLENT twisties to take advantage of. That felt so great to actually bring a car that I knew was capable of tearing up the curves. The kids were looking at my car as a POS because I was still putting it together, but after one of the kids rode in it, the word got around, and after the next rest stop, I had a full car! Ha!

I took it five hours away on a work trip, she made it fine. The next morning, when I’m on my way to give a brief, the accelerator cable breaks.

Sooo, as I’m driving it this year, I’ve decided that I don’t want to have a cookie cutter e28. I like driving low cars, and I’ve decided that I want to get rid of ALL of the power options. I had the rear manual window regulators, so I searched around and found a set of fronts. Put those in. Then I put in the manual Monaco sport seats. I pulled the AC, and started research on a manual steering box, and manual sunroof. I have the ALPINA wheels and quite a bit of other ALPINA stuff, but I’m still not sure what direction I want to go in...

    part 2

    2012
This was a HUGE year for my car.
I had issues in Jan/Feb with my clutch hydraulics. So I rebuild the system. SS line, new master and slave cylinders. Then the hydro boost for the steering and brakes died. Made a HUGE mess in my driveway, and car was just about undriveable. I took the plunge and converted to vacuum boost for my brake system. Worked out pretty well.
    (writeup over at mye28)

Fast forward to April/May, and I’m preparing for Vintage at the Vineyards and Rolling The Twisties. I decide that I should upgrade my brakes since the vacuum brake thing is going okay. So I get some E34/32 brakes and SS lines all around. Vintage was FINE. RTT was AWESOME. I beat on the car mercilessly and it just ate it up.
    Paintjob is failing

    Interior

That weekend was 2000 miles of Heaven. I was so happy with how my car peformed and felt.

    HOWEVER.
    I drove some other people’s cars. I drove Sia’s s54 swapped e28. Wowee Zowee!!
Since I don’t have a radio in my car, I had a lot of time to talk to myself and think about more power.
    I want it.

June/July had me preparing for a move to Arizona. Before I left the East Coast, I drove a Supercharged S50 e28. More stuff to think about, but really I just need a plan. I know that I NEED MORE POWER.

So, I raised the car up because I thought that my Mom might be driving it from MO to AZ...

... and I made it! The car didn’t give me ANY problems during the trip, and even returned almost 30mpg. Sweet!

So, I was moving in, getting set in my new place, not too much time for car stuff.
October came around, and I wanted to go to a vintage meet in LA. Lowered the car again, got it all ready and took it there. Met Mike Burroughs, and a couple other SW guys. My car didn’t fit in; it wasn’t all polished and clean. eh.

I picked up a Hartge repro air dam for $99, and a guy with a 520i parked right next to me. Guess what he had in his car? Manual steering. So I spoke to him about it, and he tried to assure me that Manual Steering is not for big tires, big engines, and lowered suspension. I drove his car and decided that he didn’t know what I wanted.
I had already been looking for a manual steering box for quite a while, so when I got the message from the Netherlands around Thanksgiving that there was one available, I bought it IMMEDIATELY. It took a few weeks to get here, then another month to get it mated up to my car, as the steering linkage (NLA from BMW) is different, of course.

Just last week, I got to drive the car with Manual Steering. Love it. Of course, parking lot maneuvers are a little tough, but other than that, the steering is light and responsive as it ever was. (if not better)

    2013
Now you’re caught up. Sooooo what are my plans, you may ask?

I don’t really plan to go any lower. Sorry.
Let’s talk about what’s already happened:
    M30B34 w/unknown chipped ECU
    Mustang injectors
    AC Deleted (90% gone)
Hydro boost deleted in favor of Vacuum Boost
    Manual Steering
    z3 1.9 SSK
    3.73 LSD
GC Coilovers (Konis over pretty soft springs)
    GC Camber plates
750 brakes w/braided SS lines and 25mm master (SS clutch line, too)
    Mason Engineering fr/rr strut bars
Custom skinned door cards and rear parcel shelf
Cloth Monaco manual front seats, rear cloth seat
Euro consoles from dash to E-brake console
    Manual windows
    Euro bumpers and lights
I have the “hat trick” of tuner wheels: 16” staggered ALPINAs, Hartges, and Zenders
I also have the ALPINA and Hartge air dams, the Zender will be delivered later this year.
Here is an un-rusty shell that I was planning to switch everything over to...

However, there may be another plan in the works.

Back to the plan, the ONE option I want for my car is a big engine. Just like the old muscle cars, I’d like a stripper model with a big engine. Performance oriented. Canyon carver. Autobahn burner. Whatever.
I’ve got about 90% of the parts for an intercooled 745i turbo set up. I’ll be starting VERY soon on building up a nice b34 that I have laying around. Shooting for 350hp.
Turns out this red car is just a “practice” run on building a nice car, so all of the cool stuff I’ve done so far will be transferred to a new car. More to come.
Since I have the “hat trick” of tuner wheels and air dams, would love to have the same mounting points for all the air dams and be able to interchange them at will.

So stay tuned, things are about to get crazy.
