The vg30e is a good engine. Simple design, interchangeable parts between the vg30et and vg33er, heaps of torque, sounds amazing.

Hope he takes the VG route and throws on an er head/sc onto the e block.

Those pathfinders came with the vg30 I believe, it was the next gen that had the vg33. I've got a z31, so vg30 as well, but if I had my way I'd get a vg33 and swap all the turbo goodies off a vg30et and drop that into whatever I was building. the 33 heads flow better than the 30 from what I've read, and you're (relatively) limited in power if you go the supercharged route compared to turbo. But supercharged gets points for originality, decisions decisions...
