  • Stanced Gran Torino? Can it be done?

In addition to my '84 Mustang GT convertible project, I have a 1974 Ford Gran Torino, that I've had for about 5 or so years now.

In the past couple of years I've kinda wavered back and forth between wanting to sell it or not. I've come to the decision that I'll kick myself in the ass 10 years from now for selling it, so I've got to do something to it. I've never seen one lowered more than 2 or 3 inches, and the car sits like a truck. With some modification to the suspension and/or frame, I see no reason why I can't set this car on the ground. It's got giant wheel wells, ridiculous amounts of room to tuck some 18's. Not sure whether I want to put it on air, or keep it static. I had a friend do a quick shop of a photo with this result

And I think that looks pretty damn good. I can order some pretty stiff springs, and i'm not afraid to cut springs on the car, it already handles like a boat, so I really can't make it handle worse. Plus, the inboard springs in the front end mean i'll get some ridiculous front camber. I'm willing to say fuck it and give it a shot. Car is completely solid rust-wise. Just has a few dime sized spots here and there. 17 1/2 feet long, 4300 lbs.

Solid Ford 9". No camber out of the rear, but I can notch the axle and make it tuck as far as I need.

For a big v8, it has surprisingly a lot of room under it. The engine is entirely protected by a giant steel crossmember, so there's nothing i'm afraid to drag under it.

To eliminate the need for the exhaust to go up over the rear axle, considering having it just dump right before each rear wheel?

I'm seriously hung up on what wheels to run though. It's currently on the chrome 15's, but those giant balloon tires have to go. 235/70/15's

And I think it would look pretty sweet slammed on the stock wire wheels really

When I heard Gran Torino, I thought of the starsky and hutch car hahahaha.

What is with the front? I thought 74 torinos had 4 round headlights. S:

I think it would look sick on some wide ass american racing torq thrusts.

It's the Gran Torino "Elite", the more european styled Torino. If I go torq-thrusts, they'll have to be the natural face/polish lip. Unfortunately I only have 3 of those steel wire hubcaps, being so heavy they like to bounce off, and i never recovered it. Looked at the frame today and I'm gonna have to cut out a good sized section of frame to really slam the front, but that's what plasma-cutters are for.

So I did a quick photoshop, I've been playing with the idea of bbs rc or rs reps, or just snagging some bmw wheels for it. The front hub circles are huge so idunno what I'll be able to do, possible have the center machined larger?

I did a quick rough measurement on the car, I've got like 6" till I start having clearance issues with my front subframe, and this is 5" lower than stock, approximately. I'll probably lower the rear a little more than this picture, just so I can tuck a little more tire in the back. I'm curious how the steering linkage is gonna enjoy being lowered, since it's not rack and pinion.

i would say something along the lines of 5-6 spoke wheels, multispoke might be overkill, and then bags

this thing would look sick! sub'd
