  • X7 Cressida

Hey guys so this is my new project, a 1987 mx73 Toyota Cressida AUDM spec.
It has a damaged 5m-ge, I personally don't mind the engine but ultimately its getting swapped in a few years. In Australia Probationary drivers are restricted to 6 cylinder and below NA Engines (Just incase you guys weren't aware), and I plan on either a 1uz v8 quad cam swap or 1jz/2jz
So I'm either looking at rebuilding the 5m or replacing it with a 7m-ge out of the later model Supra for the time being until I get off my probationary license. The 5m has head damage and won't run on all 6 cylinders, currently only running 4.

Also has damaged paint on the roof and bonnet from a poor respray by the previous owners, I'll be respraying that asap.

Everything else is great, very good interior (forgetting the usual damage associated with a 26 y.o. car) Straight panels etc.

So what I'd like to know is rim specs, what can I fit under this car, how much stretch on tyres etc.
Currently been looking at sets of 15 inch Watanabe's or replicas, want that old school jdm style rim. Thinking 9 or 10inch wide, but thats where my knowledge on rims stop. Terrible at offset and tyre size. When ever I've bought rims for cars its always been 2nd hand, hope they fit style with no stretch.

So SW hit me with your vast knowledge of fitment and low

Here's some Pics, sorry for the long thread Intro

    Before I bought it

get another 5m man, they are cheap as chips

no point spending money on a conversion that you ultimately don't want anyway

BTW. which state are you from? There is a MX73 with a 1UZ not far from me

I was considering it, conversions don't faze me that much but another 5m would be great, just have to find one, if you know any going cheap, let me know

I'm in Yarraville, inner suburb Melbourne. Would love to see another mx73 with a 1uz, they sound so boss.
Car is in country town Gisborne though, thats where my fathers mechanical shed is

The cressida with a 1UZ gets around North/West side of Melb, total sleeper, would not pick it for anything but a grandparents car.

If you want help with finding old skool wheels, I have imported a few sets of wheels from Japan for myself, so can have a look on the Japan Auctions for something

IMO I love the old 80's spec Cressida's
That boxy look, long lines, huge hood and rectangular headlight. Make it stand out to me.

But your right, its defs done a head gasket, but its also got alot of valve clapping on cyls 5 and 6, fairly sure its got bent valves
Rather just do it easy get another 5m, rebuild kit it and away I go
Unless I can get a head for cheap
