  • slow 1973 02 budget build.

So i thought i would finaly create my own build thread as im almost half way with my m42 swap. Not so good at english so ill keep it short. First ill show you where is started with. Then you also know why my username is Dutchtouring without having a touring. warning: wil be a thread with phone pics

started with a 1992 e30 318i touring that looked like this

Had the touring for half a year now. One day i was just searching the internet for cool pics of e30's and other older bmw's. So found a super cool picture of a rusty e28 (you al know wich one i mean) and thats what got me to this forum. So id thought id sign up. Began to like the whole stance thing more and more every time i visited the forum. So started saving some money to sort off make my own bmw stance worthy. Bought some lowering springs and shocks for it. A friend of mine parted out his 325ix and did this with his old hood. dont know why i did but i did

So after driving around like this for like a year i got bored and went looking for something different. Ofcourse bmw Fell in love with 02 series so started searching the internet for one. the first one i found and drove 1.5 hours to see was complete junk. the guy who was selling is told me he had made 1 good car out of 2. almost wanted to ask where the good one went. so searched al little more and came across my present car after month or so. Sold my e30 a few weeks ago so drove 45 minutes and fell in love instantly. there was some work to do in her but i couldnt resist leaving her. Picked her up as soon as possible and gave her a quick wash

signed up at the dutch 02 forums and bought this front spoiler from a member. brand unknown

    test fitting
    [/URL]

bolted on but there are some clamps on it to make sure it stays on its place while the kit dry's.

so after driving it around like this for about 8 months i got tired of the old m10 engine running so bad. tried all sorts of things but couldnt get it right. luckily for me the younger brother of the friend who parted out the 325ix totalled his e36 318is and i could get the engine for a good price. it wasnt that hard to take it out because the whole front of the car was gone

so got the engine home and put it on a engine stand.

when i was searching the internet for other people who had done these swaps i found
the bmw2002faq and came in contact with a guy named jake from classicdaily.net. He fabricates engine mounts, transmission mounts and exhaust manifold to do this swap. so i bought the engine and trans mount and the exhaust manifold from him and within 4 weeks they were delivered at my house. he was kind enough to send me a whole walkthrough of the build and told me what parts i needed
started searching the internet for other parts i needed to make the swap happen.
got a e30 318is intake manifold, e30 318i radiator, e30 318i oil pan and crankcase. and a( dont know if this is the right word) air mass meter because this got lost in the crash

So sprayed the valve cover and intake matte black and did some other smal things to the engine.

Got the old m10 out and started to clean up the engine bay a bit

Went to the paint shop with the idea of painting the whole engine bay black but found this cool looking creame like camouflage color. So i bought 1 can just to try it out. After spraying the can empty i really liked the outcome so bouht a few more and this is what it looked like after spraying the whole engine bay. didnt take really good pictures but youll see the outcome later on. also resprayed the brake booster but didnt make any pics of that.

    in the progress of painting

After replacing most of the gaskets on the engine started putting it back together. here's a pic of it on the stand with the new crankcase and oil pan on it

now the engine was complete again i wanted to fit the trans back to the engine so i build the worst engine stand evaaahh but it worked

transmission is back on so its time to get the engine in. a friend of mine helped me out thank god cuz it was a hell of a job to get it in propperly took it in and out 3 times. first time in we couldnt get the transmission into the tunnel far enough because the old mounts of the transmission hadnt been removed yet second time in the transmission hit the steering rack if its called like that so took a grinder and took a small piece of the underside of the trans. 3rd time in again hit the steering rack. so took a little bit more of the trans and now the engine was on its mounts. stil the trans was hitting on top of the tunnel. so took the grinder and grinded out a small bit of the tunnel. didnt take many pics of it cuz i was a little frustrated

So this is where im at at the moment. will probebly go on working on it this weekend. trying to get the transmission mounted and thins like that

low budget... I see what you did thar.
Can you take pictures of the engine <-> mounts now that it's in? Could be helpful for others trying to slap the 318 engine in their 02

Weird that it has a late model front grille setup but it's still a roundie. Was it converted somehow or did they make these and I just don't know about it? Look forward to seeing the progress on this one!

yeah i know it isnt the right grille. the previous owner just made a real mess of the whole car. when i was respraying the engine bay i found al sorts of things like a wrench and nuts and bolts just laying around. wiring loom is a nightmare too. he also did a few repairs that are just ..... dont have words for it welds that look like shit and stuff like that. i will take some pictures of that too. But when im done with the car this wil al be taken care of. its gonna take a while but i dont mind.

my guess is PO wrecked it and only late model front end was around for the repair

Gotcha, bummer to hear that. It sucks finding the remains of a half assed job, I wish more people took pride in their work. I found some pretty ridiculous fixes in my '02 as well.

I actually kind of dig that combo though, I've always liked the late model front ends. Something about the long black grilles looks good with the kidney and headlights. I wouldn't change it back, looks cool!

oke havent been here for a real long time. have been thinking selling the 02 because the 02 was way more rusted then i thought and i just didnt have the space to do al the work to fix that. also i had plans to rent a house with my girlfriend and with that al the 02 money would go into the house. but with those plans on the hold for probably a year or 2 i could still spend my money on the 02. now i just had to find a place to work on the 02 instead of doing everything on the driveway. after 6 months i finaly got a place to work on the 02. thats like one month ago and in this month ive done a few things on it. tomorow ill post pics of what ive done last month
