My new odometer gears from Garagistic came in the mail:

So I got to work, removed the instrument cluster:

    Took it apart:

    Removed the speedometer assembly:

Those are the gears that are getting replaced:

    Gear cover off:

Old soft gears removed (brass bushing hasn't been removed yet in this picture):

New gears installed (the original bottom green one is ok to reuse apparently because a new one isn't included in the kit):

    Gear cover back on:

And all back together! Glad to have a working odometer:

haha thanks, yeah it's definitely not the ballsiest car I've ever owned, but I just love the way it drives. I've heard/read lots of good things about the M42 engines, and I'm pumped I have this as my new DD.

    Small update:
Got the keyless entry all wired up and working tonight. It's so satisfying locking and unlocking it with the fob haha it's the little things that get me.

Had a super stupid moment earlier when I tested it out for the first time. Got everything wired up and wanted to see if it worked. I closed my doors and locked it, locked no problem. Went to unlock it and it didn't work for some reason, that's when my stomach dropped. I managed to lock my only key and my phone in the car haha I felt like such a dumbass. I was just caught up in the moment and eager to try it out. Luckily I managed to fish the key out with some metal wire but I put a small dent in my outer metal pillar area. One more thing to fix before I repaint it. Anyways, I got it unlocked, fixed the wiring and cleaned everything up. I'm super pumped on the key fobs, although they feel a little cheaper than the MKIV VW ones that I'm used to. Regardless, rad kit and easy install! If you have any questions, feel free to PM me.

Where did you pickup the keys+alarm combo? Should be pretty sweet and easy to use.

next mod is a 1.8t swap
I have 5 cars at the moment, 3 of which will be sold ASAP. There is no reason to have this many cars haha. I just want my two bimmers and I'll be a happy boy

My Civic is up for sale and I have a few people interested, so hopefully that sells soon as well.

I also have a 1997 Ford Aerostar that I bought off my dad a few years ago haha mainly for hauling purposes. That needs a little bit of work and will be put up for sale very shortly as well.

I always really liked the flip key design too, I think it's awesome.

Don't know what it is though.
You have done such a good job with the 2002, and I think that this E30 is in good hands.
Can't wait to see this one done.
Thanks man! I'll do my best to keep this thing clean and simple. Also, I totally agree, something about the plastic bumpers really does it for me. I was originally a fan of the small tail lights, but the larger ones are growing on me. Once I make them all red, I think they'll look a lot better

The keyless entry system is designed for an e30, so it's just a matter of wiring it in and having the keys cut

Not much action yet, still waiting to sell my Civic until I can put some money into it. Still figuring out what suspension setup I want to run, it gets pricey really fast with these e30's. Pretty much any coilover option that I'm interested in will cost me about $1000 give or take, which isn't really how much I wanted to invest, but I'll just save up for a while and it'll be worth it.

I called my local paint supply shop and they have a pretty killer kit deal running right now, $225 for a gallon of base coat and a gallon of clear coat. I'm going to buy the "upgraded" clear which apparently yields better results, so it'll be about $260 total. This is about half of what I was expecting to spend, so I was pleasantly surprised by this. The guy said mixing the original DiamantSchwarz Metallic color will be no problem, and that the color will match nearly perfect. I'm stoked! I can't wait to repaint this thing.

I'm also awaiting my odometer gear repair kit, should be here within the next few days and I'll have a working odometer again. The odometer went out 3 months ago at 170k, so I want to get it fixed so it'll stay closely accurate. It's seen maybe 2k miles since it went out.

    Yikes, I'm rambling.

Anyways, this is first real purchase I made for the car. A keyless entry system by German Engineering with the flip blade key fob's. I'm a former MKIV Volkswagen owner (which use the exact same flip blade design), so these fobs hit home. I had to have them. Can't wait to get this kit installed!
