"Its just like, hey bro, drift time." That was one of the first strong indications to me that I would enjoy this build thread, even though I already knew I was enjoying the build thread. My first car was a seven-series and I can connect with some of the experiences you are dealing with.
The tinted tails on the e39 are aight, but the crystal white always looked so beautiful to me, and then the amber bulb would light up through the clear diffused lens.... it always looked good to me.
Also, the exhaust that you picked from the e24 tree apparently solved your issue, but it looks like a left hand shake and why wouldnt you have an exhaust shop simply weld up the leaks in the original pipes off the e23? It would probably cost less than the outcome of the e24 exhaust solution. You could have a decent shop even cut out the rotten sections of the old exhaust, delete the cat altogether, install a Y pipe, and then run a fat 3" pipe to the back? Then you'd have some rumble? You could even get a long glasspack (long glasspacks are quieter, and won't kill you with the drone like the shorty's can) and run it in a straight section. I'm sure it would be impressive. ok

Thanks guys! I'm trying to put some time into my write up disguise the fact that I've done nearly no real work on this car
Anyways
!
I got it inspected. I was pretty nervous that it wouldn't pass, when you have a 27 year old car with a quarter of a million miles on it there's always something wrong. Guy at the shop thought it was a volvo haha.
bullet points:
• fixed the drivers door so I don't have to crawl over the center console
•cleaned the contacts of a lot of things that are electrical in the ignition/fuel system. It runs exactly the same as it did before
•fixed the hood so it closes now
•got the horrible rotten paint sanded down, looks a lot better now. Maybe I'll even paint it soon.
pictures:
Got an extension so my exhaust would be legal. Looks dapper as fuck. I'm probably going to cut the tip so it is at an angle and polish it up but i don't how well that will work because its low grade steel. I am not making it shorter. No way jose.
Look at my exhaust cannon ok:
Yes it still sits on the strap for the old muffler, in addition I added a coat hanger upfront. Probably unnecessary but I am a perfectionist.
Here are a couple random detail shots. Whenever I see a build thread on a car that isn't common I wish people would do more to showcase the car itself as opposed to solely showing the mods they have done. I always find looking at the designs and features of different cars to be interesting.
I love square perforations in the vinyl on this door as well as the clean, smooth lines.
Back of the center console. The slider doesn't control balance between the two mini vents but rather it controls the balance between the upper and lower climate control sections for the rear of the car, which are independent form the ones in the front. Gotta love the cigarette lighter for the rear passengers as well.
The armrest had a medical kit in it from the factory, in case you got hurt from the perils of playing golf, attending business meetings, and doing other WASP things.
I put a dinosaur there.
Crack free dash.
Here is the center console. Look at all the fucking buttons.
Window controls, window breaker, a square button that does something. All the adjustments for the seats still work in addition to them being heated of course. I'm absolutely in love with the seating in this car, however, I'm borderline devastated that my car didn't come with the factory power adjustable rear bench seat. oh the humanity.
Something else that I find quite cool is the driver memory panel, which adjusts the seating, climate controls, mirror, radio, ect to several presets for different drivers. This is a pretty standard thing for modern luxury cars but its crazy to see it in an interior from 1983. Honestly I can think of only a few interior features that my e39 has that this car does not. Heated adjustable door mirrors, driver presets, heated locks, power seats, climate control, it is all there.
Although not quite as famous as the contemporary Mercedes S class the e23 is every bit as much of a cutting edge, loaded car. The thing is, however, that the car is fully featured and luxurious without being overly complicated, convoluted, or inelegant, which is in stark contrast to modern cars in my opinion.
Sorry for waxing poetic, here is a picture of a wheel with a tire that is too small for it on it.
Here is a picture(2) of those wheels(4) on a car that is too low to the ground(1).
Ok that's it for now. I will do more wonderful things and then I will show them to you guys.
Until next time, take care of yourself, and each other.
