  • S62 m5 swap into E36 m3 v8 powaaaa

Ok so hears the deal at the moment i have a 4dr e36 s50 it has been vortech supercharged for over a year now and im quite happy with the 360hp supercharged s50.. Ive been through alot the last couple years personal problems which i finally have gotten on the right track in life aswell as financially stable.. So as a result i want to start following my dreams again and start building my car again.. With that being said Lately ive been talking to a buddy of mine and looking too swap to a turbo which would be a fun little setup and keep me busy for some time my plans were to send my spare s50 to my buddy nick who owns diffsonline he was gonna do my s50 bored to a 3.1 je pistons shrick cams rods lightly ported head full arp hardware and so on which would be capable of pushing say 500 hp safely...I have done tons and tons of thinking and debating in which my conclusion was with the amount of money i would spend on swapping from the blower to a turbo and building my spare motor i was looking for about 10 grand or so including the turbo setup .. Now with the m5 popping up into my possession for a little more than half of that how could i say no .. The main issue is i daily drive this car and while i know there are tons of people running 500hp daily on s50s all over the country aswell as outside the country i wanted to stay driveable with less worries and be a little more unique... When i came across the m5 which was hit front and rear i though hmmm i could fix the m5 and daily that and with the price of the car as a whole i couldnt pass up the deal.. After looking the car over it only has 89k miles but the body was just too damaged the front frame rails bent aswell as the rear being pushed in so i started thinking there are alot of people running ls swaps and other kinda v8 swaps and ive been looking into those kinds of swaps for years.. So i feel that with the deal i have got i cant turn down the chance to swap my favorite engine into one of my favorite chassis.. So here i am i will be performing all the work myself as im a bmw tech aswell as a few friends will be lending hands aswell... Only issue im looking at is what im gonna do for management whether i do the complete m5 wiring and dme or do some kind of stand alone....

A little run down my car has all suspension and drivetrain work done already full tckline adjustable coils all reinforcements an e36 can have poly bushings uuc sway bars adjustable rear control arms turner camber upper plates reinforced rear shock mounts diffsonline 3.38 40%lock differential 3 clutch setup strut bars so on and so on same with the brakes cross drilled all around stainless lines hawk pads etc etc.....

Engine will be 2001 bmw m5 s62 400hp engine stock
    trans 6spd m5 trans
    custom drive shaft
some kind of custom engine and trans mounts will try to use factory bmw parts as much as possible if anyone has ideas and so on please let me know

like i said above i want this car to maintain its driveability i want to be able to hand the keys to my girlfriend or my mother or whoever and not have to give them a list of do and dont do's to be able to drive it i will have factory A/C power steering everything.. I want this car too look like a slammed m3 with wheels like it always has only give away is the rumble of the engine and possibly the exhaust if i go dual.. I want it too look as if it came that way from the factory

Im only able to work on this on the weekends and holidays soo its gonna take a month or so but it will be done by end of the year

    time to begin

In all its track glory normally running ccw lm20s 17x10 rear and 17x9 front

Nice, I was planning a s62 swap on my car but I couldn't come to a deal with the insurance company that owned the car.

What are you going to do about the oil pan? The e36 is a rear sump car and no m/s62 variant ever came with a rear sump pan. As for the mounts, the e30.de m60 swap mounts for an e30 should fit.

I figured the mount situation would work out fine with the m60 setup. As far as the oil pan i will have too see how much room and what will need to be done when i mock up the motor... I haven't been able too find too much info on this particular swap online i know it has been done but as far as proper information its kinda slim.. If anyone has any real info please chime in...

I know that Alpina made their own oilpans and pumps for the B8, if you could find one of those it would make your life much easier. Finding one will be an issue though. Other than the oil pan, most of the swap info should be the same as an e30 swap, so I'd say read up on those a bit.

Here's a link about the Alpina cars
The Unofficial Alpina homepage. The online resource for all information about Alpina since 1998.

And here's the pan they used, you can see how much further forward the subframe is in an e36

interesting to actually see a v8 bmw in another bmw. ha.

Too bad the s62 couldn't be fixed, but it does look *slightly* tweaked in the front, so it's a good idea you're going with the swap.
