  • Champagne taste on a beer budget : My 1st build thread > Honda Civic content inside <

This is my first build thread so be gentle or atleast use a bit more lube!

This build has a theme "champagne taste on a beer budget" , it was a moto that my folks use to always say to me when i'd tell them what i wanted to purchase but never had the money.

Really not much has changed since then, still a broke ass but i find a way to make the best of what i can afford.
Another hindrance (but not an excuse) is my lack of a garage (instead a car pad woot woot) and short Canadian summers lol but perseverance can overcome all obstacles set before us.

So this is where i started ( few years back haha). I bought it off my friend who had owned this car since high school, i turned a lot of wrenches on this car before i ever owned it. swapped motor and converted from auto to manual. then when the ticker hit 419000km i bought it to get me to college and back.

Way too stock for my liking but the mugen sticker must add 10hp!

First set of wheels (oem honda wheels made by Enkei)

An old wise man once told me that "wheel gap is like pussy, the more gap the worse it is" , so that being said next on the block was some coilovers.

    Before

    After

This was my daily driver (winter included) so this was the max i could lower it before not being able to get out my alley when it snowed.

after a nice car wash. Loved my HIDs even though stock housings but then this happened........

    f***ing highway rock chucking bastards

Not normally my taste but cheaper then OEM lenses where these projector headlights with angle eye halos didnt work so they were alittle less lame.... i guess. They had glass lenses which sold me on them (can you say retro fitted lenses on stock housings?)

About 9 months ago i started to collect parts to turn my daily driver into something more fun. So this is where the "champagne tastes and beer budget build" start to materialize.

First thing i did was a motor swap, although i loved my stock ZC vtec it was time to move into my first proper B-series. with many months of hunting i found a steal of a deal on a jdm b16a, the old owner had electrical problems which was later narrowed down to a bad dizzy and an incompatible jdm ECU

    old motor

New B16A , i much prefer my accord intake tube and air box modified (poor mans arc airbox haha) over the old injen knock off cold air intake.

Next was my favoritist shifter ever!

before (can you spot the teenage ninja turtle? it was my lucky charm haha)

after! and after again (when i broke my first beer tap)

    more to come!

Time to start focusing on my stance!

This part is a little longer and more detailed so bare with me!

This part of the journey is where the real champagne tastes happen and where the beer budget starts to show lol

After hunting for almost a whole winter i found that for choice of wheels (within my budget) to fit 4x100 was much slimmer then say 4x114.3 or 5x114.3. This led me to researching into a 5x114.3 conversion. In this case its essentially a integra type R (ITR) set up. Due to the budget i spent the remaining winter sourcing out (piece by piece) the 5x114.3 conversion.

The swap consisted of (doing it properly ..... of sorts):
CRV front spindles (same as JDM ITR) w/ new ball joints
Prelude front calipers rotors and pads (same as ITR)
15/16" master cylinder and brake booster
      50/50 prop valve
prelude/crv axle outers with stock inner joints
      Rear trailing arms (ITR)
ITR ebrake cable (or some patience to adjust the stock integra one to work)
EP3 civic rear rotors (same as ITR)
RSX rear calipers and pads (same as ITR but require reverse orientation)

The way i did it cost me about half what a used set up would cost at a local JDM importer but even with purchasing one from an importer you would still need tons of extras.

      picture time!

Extending my studs for future spacers

Comparison of brake sizes (stock civic on the left, ITR on the right)

Tarp-o-lean Village! gotta keep it somewhat dry lol. patent pending

      best investment of the project!

      almost there!

my newish wheel on the setup

after fighting with a few things along the way i finally got the car drive-able.

Now time to go for some more low!!!!

next will be some low low yo!

        Before

        After

pretty happy with the ride height so far other then having to bash all the tabs inside the fender in.

oh and wonderful surprises waited for me after rolling the fenders hahaha .......

Epic amounts of BONDO!!!! fuck my friend is a sneaky bastard! It was awesome watching it all crumble out as i rolled it and pulled it but i wasn't upset since i knew there was some bondo back there, just didnt think it was that bad lol! oh well .... keep calm and carry on!

time for an alignment (self preformed lol)

This is a Caster Camber tool i designed and built (prototype shown in picture), it was designed to be easy to make with minimal tools and for as cheap as possible.

I got the idea after reading an old modified magazine with an article on doing your own alignment. I liked it because there are occasions where i'd like to raise the car and hit the auto-x for some good ol' fun. If there is interest in a "how to" thread for the tool i can start one. Next on the agenda is my own "quick-alignment" rack that will make it quicker to set up the 'alignment box' around the car.

after an alignment it was time for a wash and some pot hole dodging fun!

my first battle with the road, and i won! haha well not so much for my tow hook.

          it's Ronda the honda!

So you might have noticed that my hood doesnt match and some other things might pop out at you as being different. Here is the break down of all that.

first the poor man's wood steering wheel and current beer tap shifter

as you can tell from the photos i got a lot of work to do interior wise but thats all saved for the winter ahead.

Next is my chalk board hood, i thought i was original until i got onto this forum lol.

Next is my beer-battered brake booster, there's 2 versions of it (long story as to why). i think this is a bit more original but i'm not holding my breath.

          Version 2.0

          but wait there's more!

haha thanks for all the comments!

yah i know the headlights are pretty hideous!
My plan for them was to switch the lens housing from the projectors to the oem's this winter when i wont be driving the car too often.

As for the rust that is one of the first priorities on my list, i plan to try something a little different to do a temporary repair until i order brand new sheet metal.

I love the turbines, came across them at a swap meet and couldn't resist. tires should be in late next week

Good job finding a jdm b16 and throwing it in there. The car is coming together, just the little things already mentioned. I really like that color from Honda, by the way.
The only thing lower than my standards is my truck.
