      • was your spring flat on both sides ?

i cut mine but now it is not even will it shoot out if i put it back in ?

        i have a 67 250s

My comensating spring is hitting the floor board when i accelerate causing a knocking and i am trying to figure out how to fix it.

The purists said that i can remove the compensating spring compeletely and have mad camber which i did and that is not where i wanna be haha.

I cut my rear coild 2 coils in the back and left the compensating spring original height and then i got that knocking noise. So then i thought that by cutting the compensating spring it might be enough to get that half an inch clearance to get rid of the knocking. Well now i cand find a tool to compress that spring and since i cut it it looks dangerous.

I ordered new rear coils and i am going to put them in without the compensating spring to see how low i am and how the camber is. If it is not bad i will leave it.

Let me know if you have any good news haha cause right now i **** this rear suspension.! !

Ok, soooo...I finally said screw it on the second time the Hydro-Pneumatic compensator pushed the rear back up again and ordered the replacement kit:

Went to a GTG in Maryland last night with the car all nice and low...on the way there, damn rear end popped back up, muscle car stance! This will finally take care of that issue.

Hey man, when your talking about flat on both ends, are you talking about the compensating spring being flat on both ends? if so, yes. I only cut 1.5 off a new compensating spring and it just barely enough tension with the car jacked up, but now since im on air, i took it out.

The knocking sound, did it ever knock before you modified the springs? i highly doubt a purist would tell you to take it out :P they actually might tell you to take that out and put the hydropneumatic compensator in instead, hehe. You sure that knocking sound isnt your diff binding? When my car is laid out or if i drop the rear while cruising going over anything at 10mph, the rear vibrates and knocks like crazy. Depending upon how old that spring is, which may be difficult to tell, you may want to spring [no pun intended] for a new replacement spring, run about 180 or so online.

On taking out the compensating spring, you can just use a reg ol' mcpherson spring compressor, just get it tight on the spring compressed [you'll only be able to get one of the hooks on each side of the compressor on the spring] and take the two 17-19mm? bolts out, then just of course carefully uncompress it. Thats how i do it.

When i was static, i cant remember how much i cut total, it might be in the thread somewhere, but i think i cut 3.75 coils in the rear and 3 in the front? To put it this way, i cut so much off you could pull the springs out when the car was jacked up. I also cut my front bump stops in half and flipped them over in the front LCA. Hope that helps?

Thanks guys for all the input! I do like the glassed lights, just because honestly, the shape, but I'd be lying to say I didnt like the stacked better....I think I'm going to switch them back at some point, they'll have to do for now.

              • so the knocking noise started when i cut two coils off the rear springs and had the compensating spring in the car not cut. it was the compensating spring hitting the floor board when accelerating, im guessing i altered the height of the differ or the rubber mount on the rhino horn that support the whole differ in the trunk is worn and it could also be pressure on the drive shaft. I did cut like barely 1 coil on the compensating spring thinking that because i cut the rear coils and did not cut the compensating spring the car things there is a excessive load and that is why the differ is a tad bit higher, So im going to put the cut compensating spring back in and see if that helped. If not i ordered a used compensating spring and used rear coild and will put that back in and just cut one coil of the rear springs to see if the noise still happens. The rear is really pissin me off lol

I just picked up chrome bundt wheels for 120 today can wait to see how they look haha.

Ill keep you posted on the noise
                thanks alot !

                • so i put the compensating spring back in and the noise happens less often and when i make sharp turns, that compensating spring is still hitting the floor pan. When putting it back in i did notie that it wasnt sitting perfectly so maybe it is slipping out of place. I did adjust the spring height and raised the bracket on the perches. I think that helped the noise reduction because it doesnt happen that often. Now the question is did cutting the compensating spring help reduce the noise or did raising the car on the perches help.

                  oh the fun lol

                    • Lewda,

Tried sending you email but it kicked back.

Looking for info on bag size, and shock size. I just purchased a 69 Merc 280se.

I have been reading and seem to be going with SS RE5 all around.

                      What do you suggest?

I noticed that the back wheels are not caving in that much. Is this the stance or ride height that you prefer. Looks nice. I know that you are on bags now. Did you leave the shocks in the front?

I'm still debating on wether to cut the front springs and reinstalling a collapsed hydropneumatic compensator for the rear. The rear might be to low if I use the hydropneumatic compensator but I would not have to worry about cutting the rear coils.

I also thought about fabricating or using some type of bump stop on the hydropneumatic compensator center shaft so as to prevent the rear of the car from coming all the way down..Haven't tried it but its worth a shot. I do have a compensating spring that I can also use and then just cut the rears..

Bags are in the near future but for now I just want to lower the car.

I think I'm going to install the collapsed(non working) hydro-comp and then go from there. There is a chance that the rear might end up at an ok ride height compared to the front...
