Yes I think buying a welder is worth it. But I've done it both with a old soldering gun and the welder. If its really small and you already have a gun go for it. Any plastic you can melt down will work as a filler, but you want to try and use the same plastic if you can. The reason for that is you want the piece your repairing and the filler to melt at the same rate. If melts faster than the other, your bond won't be very good.

On your grill, do the weld from the back side. You can either just weld it up and leave it so the hair line crack still shows, or V-notch the front side out, fill, sand, paint. It just depends on how bad the crack is.

    Here's the welder I got...http://www.harborfreight.com/welding...ron-67102.html

    • I'll just pick one of those up, if it sucks or breaks I can always throw it out, gotta love Harbor Freight! haha

just a few cracks to repair, all of them are on the back side of the grille, not too visible from the front so it should work out. thanks!

      • Got myself a slightly loud set of horns from a buddy of mine.

I fixed the odometer in my cluster which hasn't worked since I bought my old MKII in 2005. So now finally I get to put some miles on it. It's been stuck at 124,499 since.

Also after reshaping, trimming, adding tilt trim and brackets to the back of the original dash from the car (which although extremely warped, is mint otherwise) I put it back in place.

That point where it starts to look like a car again...

Enter the Italvolanti "Motorsport" 16v wheel that made me pick up this motor in the first place.

The only thing I really know about these is TMtuning used to sell them in the 90s. I've seen 1 other personally on a Corrado. Italvolanti made them, and they are the same wheel which came on the Golf Limited (71 ever made) except that wheel featured a Volkswagen Motorsport logo on the hornpad.

a 20v one would be awesome!

not really sure what happened to TM, I do remember seeing it on there! but early last year they stopped responding to emails & orders, must have shut their doors, and more recently took the site down. They definitely effed a lotta people over.

                  • Ughhh what I wouldn't do for that steering wheel! Sweet build man, I'm about done with my 16v project as well but I'm trying to swap the diff rivets for bolts but I can't pull the input shaft off without pulling the inner most gear off, did you ever get yours fully apart? On brokevw.com it says I need to make a really long puller, happen to have one?

What kind of undersealer is on your coupe? How are you reinstalling the windsheild? Just sealant and the outer trim?

                      Thanks!

I never fully disassembled my transmission. I don't have a long puller unfortunately, I was gonna look into renting a nice set from somewhere if possible. The bearings and everything inside felt great, synchros looked good, so I left it alone. The bolt swap is a good idea, someday I'd like a limited slip so I left it alone for now.

I have no idea what's on there but its borderline greasy/soft... I think it may have been done somewhere professionally? Any spots that need touch-up I plan on hitting with 3M Professional undercoating when I get the car on a lift, runs around $9/can the stuff is wonderful.

As far as reinstalling the windshield, I need a new one entirely since it was cracked badly. A friend of mine does glass for a living so he's going to get me a new 1pc rubber Windshield gasket as well. The OEM trim never seems to hold up when it's removed so I've given up on finding a set of that.

                      • I finally got the motivation to finish the wiring under the hood. I could have simply plugged everything in and ran it but I couldn't leave it all alone. The stock loom stiff/dry/cracking, extra wire, etc will drive you nuts when you're trying to work on something.

Believe it or not this is the wiring cleaned up immensely. The way the harness is split up from the factory is absolutely stupid. Half of it comes from the tray on the battery side and the other half comes from above the heater core hoses next to the coil. I probably removed 2 feet of unneeded length in 4 or 5 connections. New ground, positive & alt cables as well. Just need to fiddle with coolant hose on the side there a bit so it doesn't rest against the dizzy.

Turned the key, everything comes on as it should. Which means my MK3 VR6 fuel tank/ump setup is good. It puked some gas out the uncapped hoses in the bay, which surprisingly didn't even smell bad somehow even though this car has been sitting since 2010. What's sweet is since that is a VR tank its 14.53 gallons. Can you say extended range?

                          • Time for a shave.

The top hole on the rear arch is the only one visible that had to be filled. The other two were just for good measure. It was previously filled by some moron, never sealed properly, and was rusting from the inside-out, hence all the pitting. Originally this car had "thin" 1/4 flares and now will sport "fat" ones with the matching trim.

There were 2 little dings in the corner to pop out, and the little seams under the rear tail lights have always also bothered me. They had to go as well as the holes for the emblems. The other side will get the matching treatment Thursday night.

                              • got some of my goodies today! Christmas for me.

Finished up my C-Hutch inspired homemade catch can. Total cost of build $30. Figured out a good spot for it slightly higher than my 2nd choice, easy to drain, and I dont have to drill any holes to mount it. Just have to finalize the mount and hose routing.

Also got my German Auto Parts order in, threw in the manual-adjusted clutch cable. Mounted up the horns inside the fender. Just waiting on my AN fittings from Bahnbrenner and this bitch will be running this weekend!

When the inner fender goes back in, these won't be seen.
