  • English 1980 Mk 2 escort

How you getting on? Riiiight brought the escort about 3 months ago, it was perfectly standard, 51000miles full service history 1 owner. It's 1300L which is the lowest spec available. It's in pretty good condition for its age, Not sure where I'm going with it but it's my daily so see what happens.

I'm on a really tight budget so planning on making everything my self that I can, I'm a fabricator by trade so hopefully be alright.

Want to run my 13" borbets from my caddy pickup, so tomorrow I'm going to have a go at re studding the hubs to run 4x100mm fitment. Stripped my hubs tonight, had some wheel nuts from a different project and had 16studs made yesterday.

That's they sat on the truck

    There the nuts and studs

This is how they sit in the wheel, bit overkill but hopefully they will look alright!

This shows the studs and one of the 10mm mild steel plates I made at work, I've got acess to CAD and a laser cutter, which is very handy. I plan on using the plates as a jig for re-drilling and threading, as also to add meat on the half shafts for the studs to anchor into.

Quick picture of the wheel offered up roughly. All going well I'll be rolling on them tomorrow!

Thanks for the comments, havnt worked out how to reply separately. Got the wheels on tonight, the difference how it handels is amazing! Well chuffed with it, also it's give me around 2" room on the front to drop and around 4" on the back.

Forgot to mention befor I've put some old springs 2" lower, nothing special on the front, and running a rs2000 diff to gear it up a bit to save a bit on fuel.

Here's the photos of the hub conversion to run 4x100 pattern.

This is the jig plate it's laser cut to 0.02 of a mm so should be fairly accurate.

Set about drilling out the ford stud pattern to fit snug over the existing studs 12mm

Then drilled throug the jig into the hubs

Once both hubs were drilled to 10.2 I taped them to m12 x 1.5

Ended up with this, all went pretty well

When doing the rears I forgot about the holes in the hub for acess to the bearing holder, ended up having to make a 10mm plate to give the studs more metal to rang on to, the CAD is of the first idea which once cut out I realised wasn't going to be that good. The semi-circle plates with the lump in the middle are the ones I used.

Second plate idea, which worked a lot better.

I tacked the two plates together, and stitched them to the hub, excuse the sketchy welds I was rushing in my lunch break.

Then repeated what I done on the fronts, drilling through the jig and then tapping

End result looks a little like this,

The studs are to long at the minute but wanted to see how it all goes befor I cut them down, I'll pop a few pictures of the escort sitting on them tomorrow once everything's clean and shiny.

            Cheers warren x

Very tasty. I do love a bit of classic British blue oval. That sir, is very very tasty, and I am just a bit jealous.

There's a builder round my way, still uses his old mk1 Escort van as his work van!!!
