  • AE86 field find; Project drift banana

My buddy decided against destroying his 1977 Corolla wagon drifting so he decided to pick up a project car and drift that. Friend of a friend had a tip about an 85 SR5 Corolla in a field that could be had for $600. We went and checked it out, it had been sitting for over five years, owner wasn't sure if it ran, but the car was mostly complete.

The picture doesn't show how bad the car was, it was rough. We towed it to a friends house to take a deeper look after he purchased it.

The most amazing thing is it fired right up, almost immediately! It didn't stay on, but that is to be expected. It needs new fluids, spark plugs, filters, etc. along with a carb rebuild and tune. Grabbed some rubbing compound and tested a small section by the door. The faded, rough, moldy paint came right back to life. Nice glossy yellow finish came through!

After we got it back to our garage we spent the night polishing the front and this is where it sits as of now:

    Immediate plans include replacing:

    -spark plugs
    -spark plug wires
    -fuel filter
    -headlights
    -lightbulbs
    -air filter
    -oil
    -gas
    -battery
    -windshield
    -brake pads/rotors/fluid

    also on the list:

    -rebuild and tune carb
    -clean out interior
    -finish polishing paint
    -clean up all trim pieces
    -few small GT-S pieces

    summer plans:

    -Megan coils
    -cool wheels
    -new seats

It honestly looks really clean for an 86, my dad had 5 or 6 of these things and to find one with good straight body panels that hasn't been beaten up on track is a rarety these days. I'll be watching this, theres a special place in my heart for these cars.
