Ford 302 works really well in these old Mercedes. They have a flat front sump so they fit without fucking around with the crossmember.

Ya man, I was gonna put a domestic v8 in my w108 when the engine blew up but I just decided to fix the one that was in there. It's already a v8 and it's much more advanced than an old chev/ford motor but I did a shit ton of research on what fits. Ford 302 was gonna be my choice of engine if I ever got around to swapping one in.
