Vigo, yes I've seen a lot of your info, you're an amazing resource, thank you endlessly! Yeah, since typing all this stuff I've found the differences, it also helped to spend some time out in the junkyard I work at staring at K-cars and Neons with a tape measure and a notepad. The GRM SL build looks promising, I'm keeping eyes on it for sure.
The plan is to hopefully modify the oil pan and add a skid-plate/body-pan that runs the majority of the car, so hopefully there's a little room to be gained. I am also not opposed to raising the engine to help gain more clearance. I do intend on running a front-mount intercooler as well, so I want to run the charge piping like the SRTs have, with the hot-side pre-IC pipe going between the pan and trans bellhousing.
I honestly haven't given the car much thought lately until a friend of mine started bugging me about getting an engine back in it and driving again. There are a couple T-I 2.2s in the yard I work at, but unfortunately cash is at a premium through the holidays. I'm really glad to see there's interest in the car, sometimes I feel like the K-based Shelbys are overlooked and dismissed too much.- Bagged '98 Chevy S10 - Stock '88 Volvo 240DL - Broken '87 Mitsubishi Starion ESi-R - Also Broken '87 Shelby Lancer #707/800 -

It'll most likely get wide steelies to begin with [I know, snore, BORING] and a quick paint job with new decals.
I've also been doing a lot of reading on suspension bits, and it seems 1st gen Neon assemblies will almost bolt in [minor strut tower mods] and even stock height Neon stuff about slams a K-based car like this. I've also pretty well got the rear figured out. Just got to actually do it.
- Glad to see you posted a build thread on the car. Hopefully it'll come off the back burner soon, and we'll the see progress as you go! Looking forward to seeing another TD nutjob on here. I owned #728 which turned out to be a nightmare, but I've always liked em regardless.
-Those MemoryFab M Technica Turbo wheels? Hells yes.
- As for the 1st gen neon front struts- they will pretty much bolt in. You will need to switch out the top hat though. To make mine adustable, I used Neon strut bodies, Daytona lower knuckles (which you might not need since your car is bigger and probably has the wider ones already) and Mk1 Rabbit adjustable coil over sleeves/springs. It's not a perfect slip together type deal. There was a little grinding/test fitting involved, but it will definitely put the front down hard.
(I had an extra can of Montana Rasberry hanging around so they are not quite as "factory" red as the OG konis. lol)

Yeah it does have the larger knuckles already. I had considered running a complete 1G Neon knuckle with Wilwood Dynalite calipers [I've got a set collecting dust], though I believe the stock rotors are too-thick for the calipers I have. Might be able to rebuild them to a wider spec though, I'll have to do more homework on it. I had also thought about using the '91+ Spirit knuckles with a lower LBJ mount for better control arm geometry, I seem to find a good few of those lately.
Us Mopar guys are an eclectic bunch of car nuts indeed.

Actually, I guess I can add some forward progress to the thread, I picked up a set of 1" 5x100-5x114.3 adapters, should I find a set of wheels I like enough to stuff them on.Last edited by Daviticus; 12-02-2013, 03:28 PM.- Bagged '98 Chevy S10 - Stock '88 Volvo 240DL - Broken '87 Mitsubishi Starion ESi-R - Also Broken '87 Shelby Lancer #707/800 -

Nice! Just remember to subtract those 25.4 extra MM from offset when picking new wheels!
Lower ball joint spacers are a thing these cars need really badly when slammed. Unfortunately you have to make room inside the wheel by running large wheels so it's not really possible to slam it on small wheels like 15s and fix the control arm angle with ball joint spacers..there just isnt room inside the wheel. Not so much an issue if you're planning to run 17s or something like that.
By the way if you find some ball joint spacers that are PROVEN to work on these ball joints, PLEASE let me know!!
I cant remember if i mentioned it already but another option for the front is to get some Raceland coilovers for a VW Caddy. Basically mk1 rabbit parts, but for the caddy they will sell the front pair alone which is nice because you cant use the backs on a Lancer anyway. The only thing i dont know for sure on doing that setup, is whether the racelands' highest setting is high enough! Hah. To run those you would have to enlarge the center hole in the strut tower and redrill the bolt pattern, though i think if you can reuse one hole you would just to drill one more. On the bottom you would have to grind/machine the knuckle to narrow it down so the mk1 stuff will fit over it. Depending on how comfortable you are doing those things yourself, it could be really cheap or not even worth it. But it's another option.
Raceland is supposed to release a set of 1g neon coilovers in the near future (like, next 1-2 months) which will not need those spindle mods but you would probably be stuck buying some rears you couldnt use. But, if you end up doing that, let me know because im PRETTY SURE the 1g neon rears are easily adaptable to 84-95 Caravan fronts... I have a 90 van too.Last edited by Vigo; 12-19-2013, 12:13 AM.

Well, my 87 Shelby Lancer that i sold has been resold to another local guy i'm talking to. He is buying a set of Racelands for a 2g neon (partially on my advice) to drop the front. I am going to trade him some stuff for the 2g neon rears and try to use those in the front of my Caravan. Even that is iffy because the 2g neon rear strut is stupid huge long. 6" longer than a Caravan strut.. I may end up cutting them up for inserts in the end. But the front stuff i know will work on the Lancer.
If that happens to come through before you do anything else i'll post up some results in case you were considering that route.
I still have my 88 Lancer Shelby which is a little bit dropped but it's very mild and the wheel fitment still sucks. :P

I'm also under the impression my Lancer and most K-cars use 26spl axles instead of 23spl like the 1G Neon uses - RockAuto confirms this, and they've yet to provide wrong info for me, but I'm swinging in the dark here. I still don't have my Lancer close to me, else I'd just count the splines. There's an influx of 2G Neons in the junkyard I work at, and a few newer K-cars as well, maybe I'll take some time and trial-and-error some stuff on my day off.
Thanks again to all that follow this, I know it's not a progress update but I appreciate the love this gets nonetheless! I've had the itch to work on this a little bit so maybe I'll make some moves on it.

I just now realized all my pics are gone, stupid Imageshack. I'll try and get all my images moved over to Photobucket ASAP.Last edited by Daviticus; 03-24-2014, 12:36 PM.- Bagged '98 Chevy S10 - Stock '88 Volvo 240DL - Broken '87 Mitsubishi Starion ESi-R - Also Broken '87 Shelby Lancer #707/800 -

Oh snap, a legitimate update!
Just bought these:
VW-spec BBS RXIIs, 16x6.5" +38. Sourced from a certified wheel whore / powdercoater friend of mine. He already has a line on different lips for them for a good price, so I'm going to go for an 8" and 9" fitment front to rear, respectively. They'll also be getting coated in whatever color I want, but I can't decide.
Any thoughts, Stanceheads? The car is Graphic Red and the interior is light gray. Lips will be polished. I was thinking a silver flake, gold or copper for the centers.- Bagged '98 Chevy S10 - Stock '88 Volvo 240DL - Broken '87 Mitsubishi Starion ESi-R - Also Broken '87 Shelby Lancer #707/800 -
