  • The devil is in the details

My 'build thread' on golfmk6.com is entitled the same, but I wanted to document my wheel + stance build separately in this venue.

    JUL 9th, 2011
    Previous wheels - matte black OZ Ultraleggera's 18x8 et45

    OCT 15th, 2011
Purchased from a golfmkv.com member who had really used & abused these wheels. He just didn't appreciate what he had.
    BBS Impul
    18x8 et38, 18x9 et45
    wrapped in 215/35 and 215/40

    OCT 24th, 2011
And finally mounted up. Picture taken in the parking garage at work. Car is actually pretty dirty.

Suspension is Ksport version3 coilovers, spun all the way down with one adjustment ring removed in rear.

    stance without spacers

    JAN 28th, 2012
Just started rebuilding/refinishing. They're going to have a gold LM theme, so low gloss vintage gold faces, black bolts, and polished lips.
    Supplies:
    -Sandpaper
    -Sander
    -polishing compound

    FEB 11th, 2012
Driving on the 78 today in N.County SD I happened upon a business called Electro Tech Powder Coating. I quickly pulled over and showed them the BBS Impul face that I've been working on, albeit very slowly and inefficiently. Allen (I think he may be the owner) told me they could strip and powder coat each face any colour I want for a mere $50, AND that he could have it back to me by as early as Wednesday. I told Allen that he's got himself a deal, and that was that.
In regards to the colour, I'm still going with the low gloss gold faces, black bolts, & polished lips. And as long as it turns out nice with this first wheel, I'll be getting the other three done shortly thereafter.

"LM inspired" BBS Impul's fresh from Electro Tech Powder Coating

    - lips need to be polished up more
    - install new valve stems with BBS stem caps
    - waiting on spacers from Adaptec
    - remove one adjustment ring from front coils

You can check out my full build thread for plans related to the car overall. This thread will just be about the suspension, wheels, stance, and other things related to BBS Impul's.

          BBS Impul wheel info:
BBS Impul's are more rare than nearly every other "desirable" BBS wheel, aside from the magnesium Motorsport e30’s/e50’s.

They typically come in the following specs:
          17x8 et35, 17x9 et38
          18x8 square, unsure of offset
          18x8 et38, 18x9 et45 or et38
          18x9 et38 or et25, 18x10 et40
No matter the size, their bolt pattern is always 5x114.3 with a centerbore 66.1. And they're always 2-piece with 26 holes. (This all of course unless they've been modified.)
Hexcap and centercap size is 71/72mm. Uses the same size fastening bolts as the BBS LM/RM.

There isn't much information on BBS Impul's available online or elsewhere. I don't even know what cars they were originally installed on, or whether they were only available as an aftermarket offering. But I've been told that they came on Nissan Skyline's, which as everyone knows were never offered in the US until the newest GT-R (the R35). This is only what I've been told, so I have no idea as to the validity, nor do I have any way to verify.

BBS Impul registry: Please post or message me if you'd like to be added to the list.

                  - About 8 months ago I picked up a set of six 17" BBS Impul's from VR Wheels, combing the four 9" wide wheels and making a spare out of one of the 8" wheels. Decided to go with the same theme, but with all original hardware (valve stems, fastening bolts, etc). And decided to throw on the infamous red/gold centercaps, courtesy of VR Wheels as well: http://www.vrwheels.com/bbs-redgold-...rs-p-4205.html

                  - Last week I sold the 18x8,9 set to a guy in Illinois since they were just sitting in my attic. I know that in some sense I'll regret the sale later, but there was no point in having two sets of essentially identical wheels.

Thanks to Arin at APR for the pic.

                  - Just ordered a set of polished quarter height hexcaps from Black Forest Industries. So those should add a subtle but very aesthetic touch to them. http://store.blackforestindustries.c...bbsquhebi.html

These came in the mail today:
Polished Quarter Height Hexcaps from Black Forest Industries
Expensive, but such a gorgeous addition. A must-have for any wheel requiring hexcaps.
