  • '88 BMW E24 635CSi Highline

Finally picked up the new car this weekend, an '88 635CSi Highline in Dolphin Grey.

    Specification from BMW:

    5327 635CSi Coupe
    184 Dophin Grey
    201 Silver Leather
    301 Anti-theft Lock
    339 De-Chroming
    209 Limited Slip Differential
    291 Wider Alloy Wheels
    401 Electric Sliding Roof
    415 Rear Window Blind
    441 Highline Equipment
    458+Memory
    498 Rear-Seat Head Restraints
    500 Headlight Wash-Wipers
    510 Interior Headlights
    812 GB Specification
    850 Additional Petrol
    925 AG Transit Protection

Since then, it has had a Fritz Bits full stainless exhaust and headers fitted.

A Becker headunit with built in Satnav of the awesome dotmatrix variety, speakers have been upgraded to Infinity parts and cruise control has been retrofitted from an E28.

And has completed 156,000 miles with full BMW history. The AC system has been completely overhauled with a conversion to later R134a gas, other recent work includes: brake accumulator, gear lever re-bush, distributor cap and rotor arm, brake discs and pads etc etc

There are only 2 previous owners prior to myself, and since 2006 has completed 8,000 miles, and (from the work I can see in the history) has been stored at Autostore, indoors, for 10 months of the year only being used around July-Sept time.

The car was purchased with no alloy wheels, so the Alpinas shown in this picture have been replaced with my 18" BMW Style 32s, and comes with a spare steering wheel also.

The plans include the same as where I left off with the red one, 17x10/11 OZ Mito IIs, airride come the end of the year and replacing the front seats with sports options and look into dying the full interior black and either a deep cardinal red, or a tan / brown colour.

Picking up the car did not come with trouble either.

After waiting for 3 weeks to go fetch it (a friend viewed for me and I blindly left a deposit), I finally set off at 5pm on Saturday evening for the 2 hour, 119 mile journey. I was meant to be meeting the seller at 6pm so got my foot down to shorten it as much as possible. Text the seller saying I will be around 7pm, he was a little annoyed understandably as he had other arrangements. Finally 'arrived' in the middle of nowhere at 7.15pm, no phone signal, no Autostore garage, no nothing. Went to a local pub to ask where it was, nobody had heard of it. Was using my phone for Satnav so could not search without signal either. Decided to use the phonebox in the small village we were in, walked up to it, at this point it was about -8*C, to find it was full of books?! Trollbox. Drove a little further getting signal and once calling the seller found out we were 13 miles / 40 minutes away, again, he was not happy so got my foot down and arrived at around 7.45pm.

Got the car quickly looked over, swapped the wheels on, signed paperwork and handed over the cash, drove it out of the storage shed and he shot off whilst we sorted out the next plan of action for getting home. Was told there was 'about £20 of fuel in it', after a couple of minutes idling the car cut out, no petrol. Drove 5 minutes to local petrol station, jerry can and back to the car. Started it, battery was now flat! Back to the petrol station, jump leads and finally we were on the way. I would have taken these with me but I had left them in the boot on the old E24 which is still broken and locked shut. Finally got the petrol station, to which the car drove perfectly and filled it up. Drove off and the car started dropping power, about 15 miles later it was getting dangerous and we pulled over to have a look. It began stalling and dropping all power very often, I was starting to stress out. The seller was ignoring my calls at this point so my mechanic friend took it for a spin and found no issues so started driving back. He then had no issues whatsoever driving home and got back at around midnight. My friend said that he does understand the appeal of the cars after giving it a good drive back. Coming from a Honda man I'm fairly impressed at that. Started it last night and worked straight off and it drove beautifully around to where it is being kept for a few weeks.

All in all, a lot of hassle, but it seems worth it, feels every bit that little bit better than the red car is has replaced with a few minor bodywork issues.

Thats my long story. I'll get some proper pictures this morning and update for you.

    Nice! Finally got it

Why don't you swap the black interior from the red one into this, is it not as good or something?

Everyone keeps telling me grey and red don't go, but I think it would work too!

                      So much win.

Grey and dark red trim work so well, best combo I think.

Nope, E24s were available in a Highline option. I believe it includes more leather and even rear A/C?

Funny that the V5 and receipt from BMW state highline, imagine a long time before VW were using it.

Red seats and centre of door card, bottom of dash, black everything else.

Leather everywhere but no rear ac that's an extra I'm looking for!
