  • My relatively low budget drift/auto-x/stance build

I just picked up a miata and have been excited to start a build forum ever since I joined stanceworks. A little background on myself, I'm a 16 year old kid, with a $2500 starting budget and a dream for something stanceable and slideable. I immediately thought of a miata, my dad has had probably 7 miata's in the last 10 years, all of which were either boosted or sr swapped, so I've been around the cars for a while and love them. After some gentle convincing and a few arguments with my mom I got her to let me pick up a miata. I had been looking around local forums and craigslist and had found few cars in my price range, but today around 4:30 my dad frantically called and said he found a 93 na miata with 117k on the clock with an exhaust, stock viscous LSD on cut tein lowering springs and some sweet sportmaxes. I immediately called the guy and set up a meeting time, and long story short picked the car up for $1700 desperately in need of brakes and an alignment. It has a few dents in the front fenders and the interior is rough to say the least but it definitely makes the perfect daily stance/drift car. When I say I'm on a budget I mean it, I just ordered a set of Riceland coils to replace the painful cut springs, **** on them all you want, I've ridden in two cars with them now and they both felt surprisingly good. I apologise in advance for the terrible quality Iphone pictures, legitimate pictures to come this weekend.

wet and shiny at the shell we met up at with my dad pumping gas haha.

Nice car you got there. My first car was a 75hp MK3 Golf so youre quite lucky

The dents in the fenders arent a problem, as you probably want to pull them anyways to fit some 9x15s or so.
As far as i experienced it a good detailing session with removing seats etc. can take car of that rough interior.

Post up more pics and good luck with thte build!

Small update I did rotors and pads the other night and am getting an alignment later
today, then I'm going to wash it and finally get some decent pictures up. I'm planning on pulling the tan interior and painting the floorpans and repainting the rollbar this weekend, I can't take this terrible tan interior anymore.

Update! My camera somehow managed to delete all of the pictures I took of the carpet

removal process but I was able to go out tonight and get some decent pictures of the car.

Here you can see the freshly painted and sparkly floor boards, if you've ever worked on miata interiors you probably know that the ECU sits under a plate against the fire wall on the passenger side and you probably also know that this spot is a notorious rust pit. Coincidentally so was mine.. So I took a dremel to the entire section and painted it all in black rust stopper/ preventer.

I know my exhaust is gay, as much as I **** it too, I love getting the "goddamned teenagers" look when I drive by people. The fact that I also have a dime sized exhaust leak probably doesn't help either

        some hella JDM xxr's haha

        Lolwut

        Casual solo cup haha

Here you can see my sweet mismatching turn signal housings, they actually came in the trunk of the car and I didn't realize it for the first 3 or 4 days I owned the car and just rocked the bulbs hanging out of the housing hole. You can also see the 5% tint strips at the top AND BOTTOM of the windshield, the PO had every piece of glass he could done in 5%, luckily the windshield has a mean crack and I can get my insurance to cover it replacing it .

Admiring my filthy engine bay haha.

Though you probably can't tell I was sideways at like 30+ in this picture, the light was definitely working against us.

I really liked the lighting in this picture.

I love playing with shutter speed, 12 seconds seemed to be the magic number for this shot.

Obviously the car is far from perfect, but I'm definitely slowly nursing it back to health, my goal is to have it to a point where I'm content with it by the end of this summer.
I'll be doing a drift and autocross event in the next two months and I'll hopefully have lots of media from them, until then I'll just be working on solidifying the car and trying to clean it up in any way possible.

Hahahaha how'd I know people on here would give me shit about it. I **** it too, I actually didn't do it, the PO did. He actually said that he was given the meghan racing exhaust canister but told the only way he could use it was if he found an interesting way to make it exit the car.. And on top of that, the welds look horrible and he had the brilliant idea to weld the exhaust hanger from the can straight to the bumper support, this put a lot of pressure of the welds and broke a dime sized hole in the already sweet sounding exhaust can. I'm going to patch the hole up so it's atleast bareable for now, I'm still debating what to do with the bumper. Right now it sounds like a fleet of mopeds coming down the road aha.

Drove my first drift event of the year yesterday, it was an awesome test and tune day for the car, everything felt solid, the suspension felt surprisingly good for the cut spring factor I got a lot of instruction from a local ripper who I've known through my dad since I was like 7 and he was still in highschool. If I can get the tires setup I need I think the next event will be marginally better. The car felt awesome accept for the understeer because of the less than ideal front tire setup. In the next month I should have my coils and new wheels with new azenis', I'll eventually be ordering an obx lsd and doing solid diff and subframe bushings while I'm at it. I ordered a new muffler and am having a local exhaust shop redo the exhaust, until I can find A new bumper I think I'm going to make some form of plastic insert for the hole in the bumper and cover it in stickers.

My friend brought his go pro out and took a little footage.

                    Updatesss

I haven't updated this thread in probably a month, in that time I got rid of that horrendous/ loud/ annoying exhaust, done some maintenance, attended some miata meets, and ordered coils too.

Because the exhaust is now flowing out of one uniform end it sounds 25 times better.

I bought a really clean set of oem cloth black seats for super cheap from a local guy to replace my destroyed tan leather. Along with replacing the seats, I had to go about getting some sort of audio together because the old headrest speakers were the only source of audio in the car, so on Monday I stopped by a local audio shop that helped me with a sub build in my last car, and because I keep bringing my friends to them they hooked me up with a new set of RF p1 door speakers fo free so I was able to achieve clean crisp sound without spending a dime!

I did some general maintenance to the car and am working on de-powering my steerung rack right now, but most importantly I just put my order in with rokkor and my coilovers should be here within the next week! So next weekend I'll be posting pictures of the install and new and improved ride height! More updates next weekend!

Keep PS, removing it isn't all that great for both drift/daily driving purposes

I've never had it haha, the pump failed before I bought the car and one of the lines has a crack in it, rather than spending $150 on a pump and lines I've decided to properly depower the rack which will make it feel so much better than it does now. But I understand what you mean when you say it's hard to slide with, I was definitely sore after the last drift day.

My cheap-o knockoff fanboy-spec rokkors are on the car and aren't nearly as bad as everyone claims. Yes they are soft but they rock compared to the cut springs I had on the car before.
They are maxxed out with helper springs in and im currently trying to find extended tophats so I can go the inch lower that I want to without removing helper springs and going back to the terrible cut springs ride quality I'm trying to escape.

Here are some more shitty photos my friends and I took of the car the other night.

I don't know why I even wash this fucking thing anymore, every time I wash it I notice new flaws in the paint. New fenders bumpers and paint are hopefully on the horizon.

My still black and tan interior reppin all of the terrible things I put in my body

Moar shitty under lit pictures of my car

That's all folks! Hopefully I'll get rid of these gross looking wheels soon.
