  • Project 744SE

For those of you that frequent TurboBricks, the first parts are just repeat of the thread on TB, but after almost 3 years, I've picked up the pieces and the mindset to start working on it again.

For those of you don't know me nor the car, this is a 1991 Volvo 740 SE, not exactly a common car as it was the last year of Volvo 740 and to Volvo NA made these cars with lots of options for a Volvo back in the days, and this being one of the last ones made, my dad bought it back in 91 with intention of taking European delivery, but he never did since work didn't allow him to take time off, so instead of having a Canadian assembled 740 SE, this one was made in Belgium.

I began driving the car back in 99, I've always liked this car due to its strange shape and my attraction to boxy vehicles, and I've also began slowly to modify the car since then, at first it was just 3" turbo back exhaust and Apex lowering springs, life was good and I loved the car:

This is how it looked from 99-2003, I couldn't afford much other than previous mentioned mods along with insurance and maintenance.

When I was a child, my uncle would often bring European car magazines back from their travels, and I've began to see "kafer" style in a German magazine, I was very intrigued and began to request for other VW magazines, the whole stretch and poke German style was mesmerizing to me, 15x13 wheels on a mk1 Golf with widebody kit was like crack to me, I can't stop looking at them, this continues through out late 90s into early 2000s before the forums thing take off.

So now I had more money than just keep the car running, I want to try some serious lowering, at that time, only 2 companies made coilover conversion kit, and one of them was MVP, so I bought the last available set and get cracking:

Do keep in mind, this was low to me at that time:

I guess you can see a pattern here on what I like to do with the car.

While it was fast and low, I began to collect wheels, a lot of wheels, a habbit that I still have.

At first I tried out the Hamann PG2 18x8, this was my first set of aftermarket wheels on this car, and I honestly thought it was so fly, I even took a photoshop class just so I can learn how to edit photos of it.

At this time I also acquire a very hard to find piece, the red/clear tail lights, it costs too much and take too long to get it, but it kinda completes the car.

I'm picking it up again, my wife has keep asking me what I will do with all the parts I've bought over the years, I drove it may be 200km in past 3 years and I feel the need to drive it again.

I had desire of more wheels, and I bought quite few more, at the time I was still single and lived with my parents, so I had little to no over heads.

I bought 18x9 Borbet Type T that I never used

And some factory Volvo 18"s that I never used either

But one set of wheels that I did used and spent lot of time and money on was the OZ Futuras, I kinda bought them on the go, I wasn't too sure how they would fit or even would they fit at all, I just bought them in Germany and kinda sat on them for a while.

The wheels were 17x8.5 ET13, 5x112, I found an old machinist that was willing to do a re-drilled so I dropped them off and couple of week later, I got them back and this happened:

I was exited as pig shit, the whole Euro theme 740 is finally taking off in my head, during this time I also got European 940 front end, a BMW Getrag 265 tranny swap and a custom hybrid big 16G turbo.

I must say it was the happiest time with the car so far, being a typical euro ricer, I bought the biggest sub box I could get, and I totally lost the use of the trunk:

It was during this time I met my wife, who was pretty hardcore when comes to cars, while I thought I was hardcore with my Volvo, she was blasting around in a riced out FC RX7 that shoots flames.

All hell broke loose after I met her, I couldn't have her topping me on being hardcore, so I began the search of more low, the search came to the conclusion of a custom coilover kit.

            Old vs new

            Now I feel better,

I sold the Futuras because I felt like I needed some changes, but boy do I regret in selling those wheels, I've been trying to buy it back ever since but the current owner loves them.

At this time I began to modify the 540 a lot, so I came across this set of wheels that I was originally going to use it on the 540, but it didn't quite fit right (needed to be lot wider to look good), these were the Alstadt Type I, 19x8.5/19x9 for an E36/46, they were in sorry shape but I've never ever seen a set for BMW or in 19"s before, so I bought them.

The wheels sat in storage while I began a collection of 18" R wheels............... that I've never used

at one point I had literally 3-4 sets of them, why? I don't know, I just had the urge to buy them.

Out of blue I decided to get the wheels fixed and swap the rear barrels to 19x9.5", and had adapters made and put the wheels on the car, there's not much clearance between rear fenders and tires, literally the thickness of a penny.

I liked how it looked, but to be honest............ it rode horrible.

So it brings it to the current phase, after we bought a house, family, work, and suddenly 3 BMW's, I kinda put the Volvo on the side,

                it lacked:
                - a headliner
                - proper brakes, the 19"s made the stock brakes horrible
                - any sort of refinements, it's literally like going to war when driving the car.

But I still loved it, I try my best to keep it clean, this was the most up to date photo:

So now I've began to work on things, the first thing I'm going to sort out is the brakes and wheels, while my car has the "jumbo" brakes, it still sucks after living with cars with bbks for past few years.

So I raided the parts bin at work and found some used calipers, I found a pair of really beat up 6 piston calipers that we used for piston seal tests and got them refurbish to match the front:

the fronts are 8 piston calipers that were off a test car and needed some cleaning.

Debating on 336mm rotors up front or 360mm, as I want to use 17" wheels, the rear will be 334x21mm rotors to keep things light.

with those last wheels the car looks sweet, but I think the R wheels would match the boxy shape of the car like a glove.

if you still have 4pcs of them please give them a try.

and i love the tail lights.

please pic of the interior and engine bay

I don't have any good interior pix nor engine pix, this is the only interior pix I've got while trying on 780 rear seats.

Engine bay is just very messy a la 80's style with all the wires everywhere from factory, I'm working on that as well.

I don't have any R wheels anymore and have lost interest in them, there are plenty 740s slammed on R wheels on the web, just google it or go to garaget.org
