Nice! Track/Hillclimb toy?

As promised, a photo of what I've been working on.



These are brand new and came with the subframe I bought a couple of months a go. They were painted in this nasty yellow colour(Pretty much the same as the bushes) So I stripped most of it off and gave them a couple coats of black to neaten them up and stop them rusting.

Top are the Cones, which is what controls the ride height. I could just chop a bit out and I'd have a lowered car, but I'm not an idiot. Middle is my Bottom Arms, and bottom is my Tie Bars with new bushes.

your rusty pictures remind me of my 1st shell. i thought its was all good then things started to make bubbles everywhere. They were lack of sheet metal behind all the filler. I feel the pain lol

Mines on coilovers all round with a beam at the rear. 1400cc at the mo but im converting it back to its original 850 and making it into a period race car this is where its currently lives..... :-)

That's crazy! I've never seen a roof that bad! Good choice on re-shelling. Those Alleycats look sweet!

Sounds like a good plan! I've got another one in the garage undergoing a Suzuki conversion.

So I got a good couple of hours on the Mini today.

I was going to finish painting the rest of my suspension parts, but my dad is working on a cylinder head and I don't think he'd be too pleased if I got it covered in paint! So I decided to work on the actual car itself.

I thought I better try and get the left rear quarter finished. You can see from the above pictures that I had to make a repair panel and this obviously needed some filler to finish it off. But the heat from the welder (I did use a wet cloth to cool it down) made parts of the panel a little warped, so I had to use more than I thought. I threw the arch on to give me an idea of where I needed to sand. And to give me a little motivation I put one of my wheels under to roughly where I would like it -


These aren't the arches and wheels I want to use, but if I can't afford new ones, they probably will be. In a different colour, most likely silver.


I'd love it a bit lower, but having never actually driven a Mini before, I don't know if it'll rub. But if it does, I can settle for this height. I wouldn't mind some wider wheels either, these are 12x5's with 165 tyres, I'd like some 12x6's with 165's, but it all depends if I can afford it or not!

Practice, practice, practice!

I'm not great at welding, most of the welds you see here are done by my father.

But just keep at it, it's all in the technique.

Can't wait to get back at it at the weekend

I went up to Celtic Custom which is a body shop I used to work at a few years a go. My mate from the shop is going to come down tomorrow and see if he can help do something with the right hand rear quarter. It's quite warped from the welding, even though I cooled it down with a wet cloth.

So we'll see what he says and hopefully he can fix it for me!

I agree, hence my questions about tig or mig. If you weld using the incorrect heat etc you can easily warp the panels. The other factor is a lot of these replacement body parts are not very good quality and warps easier....
